It's Chris in Raleigh. I'm new to the board and to chickens. Have 2 youngin's, 26 months and 8 months. What is a good source in NC to get 2-3 chicks or pullets, colored and brown egg layers? I don't have a need for 25 from a big hatchery.
Our feed store is in Hurdle Mills, NC (about 1/2 north of Durham) and they usually order Easter Eggers (green eggs) and brown egg layers. They also have an assortment of adult birds from time to time. If you are having trouble locating chicks locally, it may be worth the hike.

ps. great web site. I'd be interested to see what you come up with for your chickens. Permaculture/recycling is the way to go!

I get the ag review but just don't see anything too close. Not much for decent feed stores over here, TSC doesn't count. I'll check around some more.

This is the current coop under construction. >> http://www.neuseworks.net/files/coop.html. I'm changing the floor out to a solid one but I'm still not sure that this will be the one I use. I built the dog a real nice house that she refuses to use so it may get converted and this one sold.
I've let my chicken yard go fallow for a couple of years since a neighborhood dog cleaned out my old flock. I raised chickens, turkeys, quail, and rabbits for many years but since the dog problems I've only got rabbits left ... and fishin worms.
I figured it would be good for my chicken yard to be fallow for a while for disease prevention but I'm ready to get back at it soon. I like buff orpingtons and wyandots. Due to manicured lawn neighbors I have to have nonflyers which is ok but I sure miss the many bantums we had when I was a boy.
Here's a tip for getting FREE birds.
Call your local animal control and give them your number for when they pick up chickens or rabbits.
Primarily a big time bowhunter, hence my username, but looking forward to conversing with like minds about chickens, etc.
I am located just west of Morganton in Burke County. I have 65 adult chickens and 8 babies in a brooder.
In Standards I raise Black Australorps, Buff Cochins, and am getting started with SQ Blue/Black/Splash Cochins. I also have a decent size laying flock of hens(White langshans, Light Brahmas, Barred Rocks, SLWyandottes, Welsummers, Buff Orpingtons, and a few mutts.
In Bantams I raise Blue Phase Bantam Cochins. I also have a flock of Mutts that include some of my absolute favorites.
I am going to the Salisbury Show(Mar 3) and the Winston Salem Show(Mar 31). I am not showing. Just shopping, looking, and for a little gossip.
I'm near Wilmington in a little town called Kelly (35 miles from the closest Walmart!). I moved out of the city two years ago onto 13 acres, space for our 4 horses. Since then there has been the addition of chickens and guineas (soon a couple of cows will join the "farm") and of course I have developed a huge case of "chicken addiction"! I love this site and the great information and help! Anyone in my neck of the woods?
