(1) I'm new to raising baby chickens, and hope to add a duck to the party

(2) Im getting my chicks around May 10th (trying for 2 but hoping for females!)

(3) im getting Rhode island reds!

(4) They are great companions and loveable creatures, always had chickens growing up so this is my first time owning my very own.

(5) My other hobbies are working a bit at a friends duck farm, so I do have some questions in regards to raising ducks and chickens together!

(6) I work weekends right now, so my free time is going to be towards caring for the little babies until they reach an age where they can go into the coop.
I'd like to perhaps post a separate thread on ducklings and chicks being raised together and ask for any advice on that, so once I figure out the forums i'll be posting a question in the near future!

(7) I found the website through internet research and while searching for a breeder (which I managed to find through facebook!) I came across here!

Cheers!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya

I've never had an issue with ducks and chickens together, but I do brood them separately. The ducks kind of stick to themselves. You'll hear others tell you that drakes will kill chicken hens, but this is something I've never seen or experienced. But then again, I do brood them separately.

That's great to hear that! Thank you for the warm welcome! My concern because I will be raising both the duckling and the chicks around the same time, is how messy ducklings can be and whether to raise them in different pens in the house. However I know ducks need buddies growing up because they're super flocky. So i'm unsure how to mesh them together when they're little babies. My grandma recommended shavings!

Should I perhaps start a different thread for this question? Thanks!
