Here to introduce myself. I'm Kip, and I'm mainly here to ask questions about raising my chickens so I can give my girls (and boy) a good life.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm somewhat new to chickens in that this is the first time I've raised them mostly on my own. My family has had chickens in the past some years ago, but spring this year marks what I consider my true introduction to caring for chickens.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Eleven total. Ten hens and one rooster.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Ameraucana, Australorp, Brahma, Buff Orpington, Columbian Wyandotte (supposedly--she looks more like a Brahma to me due to feathered feet), Easter egger, Golden Wyandotte, Lavender Orpington, Leghorn, and Silver Wyandotte.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I find them extremely charming. I've always loved animals of all sorts and it's a fun experience to learn about them firsthand. They teach me something new every day.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Pretty much just art.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My mom helps me tend to the chickens when I'm unable to, so I consider her co-owner. I live on a ranch and my family used to own quite a variety of animals, but now we're down to just chickens and cats. In terms of my job, I'm an independent artist.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've come across forum posts on this website multiple times while researching questions I had about my own chickens. I ultimately decided to join because I realized I'll probably have some questions that haven't been asked yet (such as the one I'll post about after this post).
