I received my order from Murray McMurray Hatchery this morning and out of 26 chicks 15 were dead. I immediately took out the ones that were moving around and dipped their beaks in water and set them in the brooder to warm. I then sifted through the dead babies and found 3 that were barely breathing and dipped there beaks in water. One died right after and the other 2 are still struggling. I called the hatchery and they are going to send out another shipment to me on Monday but I don't want all of these little babies to arrive dead again. Any suggestions?

I got my order today and all of mine are happy and seemingly healthy... I ordered 25 and got two bonus chicks.. I am sorry to hear about all your DOA chicks

I don't know where you live but mine traveled to GA.. not sure if that made a difference.

I live on the coast of SC. It is around 50 degrees here. I was expecting maybe 2-5 doa but not 15.

Maybe I have my weather messed up, but aren't some shipping hubs still in delays and such from the snow last week?

There isn't much you can do about how fast they can get to you.

I know the weather on the west has been bad and maybe that is the reason why i had so many doa. I am debating on waiting until it gets a little warmer to get my replacement shipment out but I don't have enough room to have 2 brooders. Is it worth risking the little lives again?

I am so sorry... how distressing that must have been. I just received an order from them Saturday and all were healthy and happy. I have ordered from McMurray before and have always had healthy chicks. So don't worry about the new ones they are sending, most likely they will be fine. I don't know where you live but perhaps they were not handled well somewhere along the line. My post office calls me to come pick them up when they arrive so I get them as soon as they get them.... I'd check with the post office if you haven't already.

Were your birds standered sive or bantam size, mine where mixed sizes and the bantams got crushed. Same hatchery to. They should put a divider in the boxes

kelidei- I went to my local post office last week and made sure everything would be ok and they called me as soon as the got in this morning. Fingers crossed the next batch will be ok.

Lofty Dreams- All of mine were bantams 9- silkies 8- mottled cochins 8- Golden seabrights and 1 free rare breed. I know which one is the rare breed and it survived and 2 silkies are doing great but 1 is showing signs of not making it. The others are a debate and look the same but looking forward to finding how how many of each I ended up having.

UPDATE* the other silkie didn't make it

Don't like it that you received them on a Monday. If they mailed on a Friday, that's really four days in transit. Ask them to mail out on a Monday, or Tuesday.
