Help! Any wildlife rehabilitators?!

You're in Lacombe? And nobody gave you my phone number yet? We're in Kenner and we run Kasia's Ark Bird Rescue. We trained at Clearwater Wildlife Sanctuary on the Nothshore. Nancy is very slow in accepting new rescues and does so now by appointment only, so if it's anything that has feathers, we get all the calls. We also volunteer at the Audubon Zoo, and were there today, otherwise I would have gotten to this sooner.

For now, don't try to force feed the bird. If you have a pet carrier, put it in there and in a quiet room. Leave a bowl of water, that's it. His wing looks pretty bad, but that's not a problem for me, I've had much worse.

We can get the bird from you tomorrow if you'd like. And if I can't get through to Nancy, I'll bring him to my avian vet, Dr. Gregory Rich, on Monday.

I'll PM you.

Wow! Isn't God good! I just finished asking Him for help and I get Kasia's PM!

Maybe now the poor bird has a chance!

Hooray! I am so happy the bird will be going where it belongs! The wing does not look good (it could be in the shoulder based off the pictures and that's not good news if it is), but I'm sure Kasia will do everything she can to help! If the bird is not releasable perhaps there's somewhere it can go to be an education bird.

Regardless, good luck to both of you and to the poor gorgeous egret!

Outstanding!! I just love this site and all the great people on it.

Please keep us updated on how the bird does if possible. It's always so nice to know how things turn out and maybe learn a bit in the process too.

I'm worried about that wing injury as well. It doesn't look good from the photos, but I guess I'll see better when I get him. If it's bites and a sprain, that can heal, but if it's an open fracture or torn ligament, well, if I take him to Nancy, her vet will put the bird down. If I take him to Dr. Rich, he will do everything he can to save the bird, but if it needs an amputation, then I don't know. We took a mallard to him that had a wing that some kid tried to cut off and our vet was gone that day and another was there. Dr. Rich knows to call us and ask if we would be willing to adopt an unreleasable duck but the vet that day didn't know and put the poor duck down because she didn't think we would pay for an amputation. We wouldn't have been able to, we have a lot of rescues that are now our pets, and a lot of the handicapped ones need regular veterinary care, but we wanted the duck back and didn't care if his wing was droopy.

Oh, can you tell me if the wound has any oozing from it or maggots?

Hi, Ya'll,..
just got out of church and checked on the bird. I am so impressed with it's attitude considering it's injury. Not too skittish and even put my little toothless dog in his place. He's preening and walking and looking around.
No maggots,. injury probably less than 2 days old. It ate a baby flounder this morning and has been eating bugs in the grass,.. haven't seen it drink,.. but I checked on it a few times in the night and it was always by the water bucket ,.. sleeping.

We were hoping that if that wing needed amputation it could be an education bird,.. (We are right next to the Lacombe National wildlife Refuge and they have a one winged owl there. That's the first place we brought him but no one is there on the weekends.) If we had the money we would take him to a vet,.. but we are so glad for Kasia's help. I am going to call her now.

ETA... Yay Kasia and Will! My DH and DD are meeting them at the Cracker Barrel with the big white bird! She was so sweet on the phone and funny,.. she has a real heart for her work!

I got the egret from Yvette's husband this afternoon and we were able to look him over and see what exactly his injuries are. He has two open fractures on that left wing, and blood and lymphatic fluid are dripping out of both wounds. The area is very inflamed and bruised and some of the tissue under the wing has already become necrotic. He is also very anemic. We gave him pain meds and an injection of Baytril and set him up in our duck pen for the night. He is eating good, but I noticed that he is making himself poofy, and that's not a good sign. I sent photos to my avian vet to get his opinion and this is what he said:

Open fractures are generally a disaster to control because of bacterial invasion of the bone cavity. With him being anemic, even if we tried to amputate, he would first need a blood transfusion, and that doesn't guarantee his would survive the surgery, which would be very costly. The bird may be acting normal and walking, but birds hide their illness very well so they don't attract predators. Bring him by in the morning so I can have a better look and do some blood work, but I will tell you it doesn't look very promising.

We can all only do what we can do and it doesn't always turn out the way we would like. You both are just awesome though for taking the time and energy to try! Even if the poor thing ends up having to be put down I'm sure he's had a better time of it then he would have if Yvette and her husband hadn't brought him home and you hadn't offered your services.

We are so sad that his injuries are that bad,.. I had an idea when I saw them that you would say that,.. but held out hope. He was not bleeding like that at all when we looked at the wound,. I hope all the transporting didn't make it worse,..
Thanks much for doing what you can ,.. or have to.

WE ( like most people on BYC) are often picking up animals in need and are blessed to get to help some of them.
,.. I just found a wren this morning and removed a weird piece of plastic from it's beak,.. poor thing was so weak that I just and picked it up,.. but it drank and drank and sat a while and flew of to one of my feeders.

It's nice to know that Kasia is just over the lake when we have another hard case!
