I noticed my 3 day old chick has some strange tiny bugs slithering on it it was a clear/brown and quick. I could only see it on my black chick as the other two are white. We got the chicks from a friend who hatched them from her broody hen outside. Please advise how to treat, are sprays ok on such young ones? I want to ask quickly since the chicks are so young. Thank you.

hello, I use food grade Diatomaceous Earth aka DE i purchase at Tractor supply company or any local feed store, I use it to dust the coop, the run, 1and the egg boxes, it keeps the chicken and their environment mite free, I also add some in the feed bin in the feed. its all natural, I also dust the horse stalls regularly and find that it keeps the fly population to a minimum, i move the animals out into another area when I do the treatment, DE is a fine powder, apply sparingly, best to use a mask to avoid accidental inhaling. Point is you dont want to treat just the birds but also treat their environment where the mites and other insects can overwinter or hide. Works for me, thought Id share, Joe

Got the dust I couldn’t do it so someone did it for me. Oh my goodness!!!! The poor babies! Are they even going to make it they are covered! The brooder is now covered in lice and all the lice are just like clinging to the end of their fluff. Two questions, are the chicks going to make it and does the stuff kill the lice?

You need to make sure the chicks have been puffed with the powder and the brooder needs to be completely cleaned out, dusted, then refilled with whatever substrate you are using for bedding. Relax, I know they're gross, but all will be well.
I have another rubber bin so I set up their stuff in there and put them in it. They were rubbed with a ton of powder and are now sleeping. Poor babies they had a ton of them! Thank you so much for your help hopefully they will be okay!
