Help baby chick has strange bugs on it

You just did a home lab experiment and saw the difference between DE and permethrin. While both are dusty powders, they are very different. DE is the powdered remains of the skeletons of ancient ocean creatures. If you were to examine it under a magnifying lens, you would see lots of very sharp particles. When lice encounter these razor sharp particles, they get cut and damaged. This is also why DE is dangerous for all air breathing creatures as it can injure lungs and the respiratory tract. However, the damage it may do to the lice or mites is inefficient as far as doing a thorough job. Many of the vermin will escape and keep on living on your chickens or coop.

Permethrin is an insecticide. It's toxic to insects and damages their brain cells and nervous systems while still being safe to use around chickens due to the toxin in it only targeting the insects, not chickens or people. As an efficient insecticide, it will eradicate the lice or mite problem immediately.

Here is a good article talking about the differences. http://www.lonestarfarmstead.com/an...in the normal function of the sodium channels.

There are lots of different products with permethrin, most of the time I buy the hi-yield livestock and garden dust from my local feed store for $7. Sevendust can also be used.
This is the one we got.

Yes, that dust is safe for chickens. However, you've just brought up an important point, and that is to always read the ingredients of any insecticide that you are thinking of using on or around chickens. Some may include petroleum distillates in addition to permethrin, and that would make it toxic and dangerous to use around poultry. If in doubt, do a quick Google search and ask if a substance is toxic to chickens. Those two minutes of poking keys on your device could save a chicken life.

this is why I joined this forum! learn, learn, learn. will check out the permethrin. I never had a bad insect break out like Ms farmgirl has, good to know about permethrin though, just in case...thank you Folks!
Yes you always learn something! I learned never to get chicks from other people!!! And I also learned how to get rid of lice!

You can absolutely get chicks from other people, you just need to know who they are and what their husbandry practices are like. I sell lots of chicks every year

So I told the person who gave us our chicks about the lice and she dusted hers and didn’t see any lice is it possible we saw them crawl out because we did it at night when they are active? I couldn’t imagine hers being unaffected. I also used a good amount and covered them heavily. Now I’m wondering if I could have used less or if it was ok since the one was clearly infested.
