Earlier today we did put DE on them. I’m really upset with myself! Will they be okay? And yes we used the powder with permethrinAre you using the permethrin dusting powder? Someone mentioned DE. DE does not kill lice and mites. And DE would be especially hazardous for baby chicks as it's extremely caustic to such delicate respiratory systems. The very thing in DE, calcified remains of ancient sea creatures, that discourages lice and mites is what is so dangerous to the breathing of small chicks.
Permethrin is non-toxic to chicks so don't worry. Lice can overwhelm baby chicks, but lice are not nearly the threat to their lives as mites are. Treat only those chickens that you find lice on.
A permethrin powder is your best bet
Good suggestion! You need to make sure the chicks have been puffed with the powder and the brooder needs to be completely cleaned out, dusted, then refilled with whatever substrate you are using for bedding. Relax, I know they're gross, but all will be well.
Thank you that is the DE I used on them!Good Morning, what powder is that auntjessi3? is it the DE or something else? she has to dispose of the material she's getting rid of in a tightly sealed bag or just toss it in the burn bin if she has one on the property. Good luck with that farmgirl, chick should be ok, and so will you too....here's something I found for you....Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth powder contains silica in a concentrated form which makes it unique. It is inert and safe to both humans and animals. Diatomaceous Earth powder works as the mites crawl through the dust to feed on the hens at night. its always a good idea to apply in a well ventilated area, I personally do not use a mask, Ive used it for years, never had any losses or issues from it, over time, if used as directed you will notice no lice, and fewer flies as well. Hope this helps, have a great day, Joe
When we put the Permethrin powder on the chicks the lice all started crawling out. Earlier that day when we put the DE on nothing happened.Good suggestion!
I agree, Permethrin powder would be the most effective.
DE is not going to help with an infestation.
There are lots of different products with permethrin, most of the time I buy the hi-yield livestock and garden dust from my local feed store for $7. Sevendust can also be used.what powder is that auntjessi3?
