Thank you!I can't really give an amount, but I do make sure it gets down to the skin, under the wings and vent area

You're using Permethrin poultry dust correct?Saw tiny Lice on one of the chicks last night so we dusted them again but nothing came off. Is it because this time we did it during the day?
Yes. I keep them in plastic tote and use pine shavings. The bedding is dumped out every day. You're using Permethrin poultry dust correct?
Where are you keeping the chicks?
Lice can infest bedding/housing that the chicks are in, so it may be a good idea to change bedding daily or use puppy pads temporarily so you can change those a couple of times a day to get rid of any lice hanging in the brooder.
You can absolutely get chicks from other people, you just need to know who they are and what their husbandry practices are like. I sell lots of chicks every year
I saw lice on the one chick the night I brought them home before they came near my big chickens. my friend also lost a chick today and I’m wondering if it could be from lice?Exactly! I see people warning not to buy chicks or adults locally and it's honestly a bit offensive. The warning should be to be careful who you buy from, ask questions, carefully examine birds at the time of sale, and have a quarantine area and sanitary practices in place.
My flock recently got lice... they live outside, it's Florida, birds fly wherever they want to.
I treated with Elector PSP and informed all customers waiting, some people acted like it was HPAI or Mareks. Oy!
I was thinking (but not saying) it's an external parasite not a disease, you will have to deal with it or something similar sooner or later.
Sellers should always be honest and upfront about flock health. And Buyers need to carefully consider potential causes before assigning blame. In this thread, OP says she had taken her chicks outdoors near the main chicken coop. Now it's anyone's guess where the lice came from, but OP says she can't imagine the seller not having the problem.
Do you think I should go ahead and treat my adult chickens? If I check for lice will I even see them? I didn’t see any lice on my chicks when I looked through their fluff only when the lice crawled around on them.I went through this with red bird mites, I would absolutely disassemble the housing and sterilize it. I had the red mites come back twice and finally had to burn my chicken tractor since I could never get the mites out of the cracks in the wood no matter how much Permethrin I used.
Destroy/burn your chicks bedding. Assume the older hens are infested.
DE.... Ive used it for years, never had any losses or issues from it, hens are clean and healthy, over time, if used as directed, you will notice no lice, and fewer flies as well. Hope this helps, have a great day,
made that comment as an FYI because it is something that has had good results for my flock, however, i recently purchased some Permethrin to try it out as a comparison if the need should arise, farmgirl i apologize if I created any stress or problems for you, your not reporting any chick losses as yet...thank goodness... this forum lends itself to share experiences, as well as knowledge, my experience is a positive one about DE. You use what works for you, some of it is trial and error, some of it you learn from more experienced knowledgeable enthusiast, point is you have options! have a great evening, many blessings to you, your flock, and family.
