HELP! broody died eggs are dying

My fingers are crossed for you.

It is totally normal for it to take up to 24 hours between seeing the first pip (peck mark) and the chick starting to widen the hole and hatch.

The article aart referred you to is excellent reading -- highly recommended before you decide if you need to assist.

Damp towels or misting/moistening the eggs is counter-productive. It actually draws moisture from inside the shell as it evaporates.

If the pip was not in the air cell, it could take an *extra* 24 hours to zip. Usually they are internally in the air cell for 12-24 hours, then externally pipped for 12-24 hours. So if the internal step was skipped, it may need extra time to absorb.

So if i heard her pip it was maybe internally. And maybe now shes external. Thats why a piece of shell is off.

I have not heard movement since. Or peeps.. a worry or just wait another day?

Yes, but water is not the best thing to use, it'll dry right back up. I tiny bit of coconut oil or vaseline or antibiotic ointment work much better.



Did you read this article......some good info in there even if you don't actually 'assist'.

Okay! Since i cant control humidity too well. Ill apply some coconut oil on the egg around the pip. That might help it stay warm but not too dry. While it takes forever to hatch.
Just strange it should be out by now.

Under normal circumstances yes....but...

Just put CO on the membrane not the shell..tiny tiny bit.

I still cant hear any peeps. Shouldnt it be going nuts and trying to come out?

I only noticed the pip today at 10am so im just worried it might die inside the shell.. i cant hear anything.

Just give the chick time Mine pipped early in the morning and didn't hatch until late that night. Pipping can take a while

Pipping and zipping is hard work for the chick. Some need several hours -- as much as 24 -- to rest up after the first pip before breaking out. They are often quiet during this rest-up phase. It's too soon to worry.

Attached is a link to second, excellent BYC article regarding how and when to assist during hatching. It talks a bit more about when NOT to intervene and does a good job laying out what is going on inside the egg when the chick is pipping and getting ready to hatch. I found it really interesting and it definitely keep me from worrying so much during the early hatch phases.
