I took my white willow, 8 month old Americuna to a vet in OKC, Dr. Weis at Awesome Care. I highly recommend this vet. She is wonderful. I put my Willow in a medium size travel taxi with prairie hay in it. Dr. Weis checked the chick over thoroughly and found that the area around the vent (there's a proper name for that opening, can't remember it right now) it was very stretched with some bleeding loose tissue . The opening would not close completely and urine had poured down the lovely white feathers under and made a nasty mess. Dr. Weis said she had laid so many eggs that the tissue in that area was stretched. She washed the area and suggested I go home and put bag balm or neosporin on the vent only. We noticed a big improvement in her last night and today the vent has closed up and now it is functioning properly.

We bathed her off with a plastic tub of warm water and Dawn dish soap, and rinsed with vinegar & warm water. Patted her dry and blew the area dry with a hair dryer. She is in the travel taxi with food and water and warm by our fire in the woodstove. We will clean her again tomorrow and let her dry completely and let her return to the flock later in the day. She laid an egg at the Vet and I gave it to an assistant to enjoy. She didn't lay today which is good because it was dark in her container. I'm happy to report she is doing nicely and we made it through all the extra work and effort. Merry Christmas everybody.

I posted that my Americauna had a very rough start delivering her eggs. She suffered from an enlarged vent area that poured out urine. Well after taking her to the vet and advice as to how to clean the area to help her heal and contacting a website called Just Answers that advised I use preparation H cream on the cloaca (vent) I found her getting better. Several days later the cloaca had returned to its proper size and she began laying and drying up on her backside with all the feather fluff returning. She is laying huge eggs now and back to normal. I did bring her into our pet taxi by the woodstove with hay during the night and let her out in the backyard with the other hens during the day until she was back to normal. Just thought someone might find this helpful rather than cooking their little problem.

Hi Henipeni and welcome to BYC. It' a great source of information. Thanks for posting this information. I'm sure others will find it helpful.

Hi I understand what you are going through. I might not be much help, however, I have a hen that has been dealing with the same issue for about 5 months, she will be 1 year in April. I took her to the vet when I discovered the red swollen bulge bellow her vent and he did a biopsy on it and discovered it was mainly a fat mass with a bit of bacteria in it. He prescribed an antibiotic. The antibiotic didn't do much because it is very difficult to get a pill down a birds throat and she mainly picked it out of her food. Needless to say, she has maybe laid an egg twice throughout her life. Although it appears extremely uncomfortable she has been getting along fine, up until the last few days. I am almost positive she is egg-bound, she isn't moving and I have to hand feed and hydrate her. I have started back with yogurt, and whole wheat bread with olive oil on it. A good thing to get your chickens on, which I did after her vet appontment, is Apple Cider Vin agar (1 tbl per gallon of water). ACV is a natural antibiotic that helps keep bacteria out and hold a healthy digestive tract. I normally give it to all my chickens on a daily basis. Honestly I became a bit slack with the ACV and I strongly feel that is why she isn't doing good at the moment. Anyhow I hope I helped a little and please keep me posted. If you or anyone can add any suggestions please let me know, I am worried about my girl.

If you think she is egg bound sometimes soaking them in some nice warm water will help them relax enough to pass the egg. you might have to do this more than once, then put her in a very quiet room with a heating pad with a towel wrapped around it, you can also lubricate the vent area with vaseline just a little ways inside too.. sorry your dealing with this, I hope she lays that egg soon..

forgot to say if you soak her be sure to dry her well after to keep her from chilling,

My girl got up today and has been walking around with her sisters and enjoying the pretty day. So thankful that she is better. I think the yogurt, wheat bread with olive oil and Apple Cider Vinegar brought her back. I hope this can help someone else.

My chicken looks exactly like the one in the drawing with the red swelling, what does that mean? I think it might be internal laying but she's perfectly normal otherwise, she's just all swollen and red and not laying! But she is eating and moving around and active?!
