Help! Chickens eating metal filter around AC!

I'm not sure what to do. My hens have eaten away at the filter covering the AC. I have a VERY small yard and can't keep them contain to one side of the yard because it is so small. I also don't want to confine them to their coop. I'm trying to figure out how to keep them from eating it. Also, this is concerning because I don't know about the safety of eating their eggs now... :/. It is one thing to eat all my plants, but I can't have them ruin my AC.

make a small fame around AC fence off with 1/2 or 1 inch chicken wire. AC can still work Chickens cannot get to what they want to eat.
I just lost a nice Black copper marans rooster 4 month to eating net plastic Choke to death. They will eat the darnest things

My chickens just started laying but I find one eat it egg so I but a plastic eggs in the two nesting boxes not it seem to stop but today I fond a broken egg all in the nesting box?
