Hello, I need your help.

Starting in February, I noticed one of my chickens had a bald spot with damaged feathers on her back (see first photo). Initially I thought it was due to pecking from other hens. I put a saddle on her to deter further damage, and after two months, it helped the skin heal but no new feathers grew in.

Then I noticed a different hen was developed bald spots in her sides, above her legs. The skin seemed fine, and I never saw any broken or damaged feathers, but again I thought it could be due to pecking or molting.

Now I’ve noticed that most of my 7 chickens have odd looking feathers. Some appear like the ends have been cut off, my Legbars have their crest feathers missing, and they’re all missing patches of feathers around their tail feathers and on their necks.

The hen with bald patches above her legs is in the worst condition — she now has what looks like feathers that have been over preened? (I don’t know how to describe what I’m seeing so please see the last two photos.)

After extensive googling I’m thinking it could be a severe mite infestation. My chickens are only one year old, so molting is unlikely. Have any of you seen this before or know the cause? I ordered elector psp last night and plan on doing a full deep clean and mite treatment with the elector psp, but any other advice is appreciated.

I'd treat for mites, it won't hurt. but how big of space do they have for how many hens? What's their diet?
I have 7 chickens. They have access to their hen house and run, and they don’t free range very often due to predators. The hen house is 30 square feet (6’x5’), and their run is 102 square feet (17’x6’).

The feed in their run is an organic, 16% protein, soy free pellet. Then I typically give them a fermented whole grain feed (scratch and peck brand) with table scraps, spices & herbs twice a week.

Do you think boredom could be a contributing factor? I’ve also ordered some hanging baskets to put their tables scraps in as a way to provide some stimulation.

I have the exact same issue happening. We just found one of our dead this morning. I had treated with elector PSP lat week. Help! What else could it be?!?
I also just made a post about this before I saw yours.

That’s awful! Did egg production slow down at all with your hens? All our hens except one are laying normal.

Egg production is going strong.

I can’t figured it out. I honestly thought it was mites. But she died a week after treatment…

I am thinking of trying Corrid even though poop looks normal. They also are not sluggish. Or puffed up. But I’m at a loss.

I have been searching for a different soy free layer pellet feed but have been unable to find one. I’ll be pissed if it’s that expensive feed. We’ve lost 4 hens since switching to it.

good luck.

Did you figure out the problem? Is it mites or chickens pecking each other? I have the same issue with my chickens right now and trying to figure out what's going on. Thanks

I have the same problem and have lost 4 hens so far this year. I'm at a total loss and need help too. I treated with Elector PSP yesterday after 4 rounds of Ivermectin Pour On didnt help longer than a month or 2. I have about 22 hens similarly effected but only showing 1 in the pictures. More details of my experience on this other thread. I pray we can all figure this out!
