I had two pet diamond doves and my last recently died....I was out walking the other week and took a double take when I saw a diamond dove in my yard. I just saw it again today and it keeps coming back into our yard...I have tried to slowly walk up to it and grab it which hasn't worked...i doubt it can survive for long in Ohio and I don't want it to die...any tips on how to catch it?

Sprinkle a small amount of seed on the ground in the area you see the dove.

You can get a small basket or bird cage and do the old box and stick trap thing...

When the doves goes under the cage to eat the seed pull the string attached to the sick and the cage will trap the dove.

Good luck.

I'm sorry about your dove.

There are some specially made traps that you can design for catching birds. They have a string that helps you close the lid when the bird goes inside for a treat. Teach the bird to come for the food first (just set some seeds down), then set up the trap. This way it won't be as scared and will be more likely to enter it.

I hope you catch it!

It may be a lost pet, so you should report this to the humane society. You might reunite an owner with their long lost birdie.

I have a pigeon trap, new still in the box. I'll send it to you if you want. I'm over in New York state and once a homing pigeon kept landing in our driveway. By the time the trap arrived, the pigeon had moved on. Let me know if you want it. It's made by Safeway in New Holland PA. I'd like the trap (which is of course humane) to go into the right hands and your sure sound like it.

Thank you for your help! we did catch it...but turns out its mate escaped with it...we saw it shortly after catching the 1st one...hopefully this one will be easier to catch!!

Great news. Good luck catching the next one...I'm sure you'll be able to do it! Let me know if you need the trap.

Just put out cage with lil cage that's holding diamond dove inside. Dove trappers "pigeon" (rock doves that were coined from French word cause larger eating etc size of species, and later applied to homers/racers as well n then any breed species of larger size now that i think eight ounces or more), and many feral and pest labelled species trappers all say stocking trap with one to several are easiest way to trap. Once it hets in with other having feed water etc, it'll just settle in basically waiting for you to come pull string that'll hold twisty tie in place barely holding door open. happy hunting, and best of luck! keep us updated.

I am looking to buy some homing pigeons, but there are so many red tailed Hawks, Eagles, kites, etc. so I am worried that they will be eaten.

any ideas? You guys seem knowledgable

It is expensive, but if you can't let them fly free at times, you could build a large out-door aviary. They can be so beautiful if set-up right and are by far the best way to keep pet birds, as they can fly, get sunlight, and have space to exercise. I don't keep pigeons, but I have done a lot of studying on the proper care and behaviors of pet birds. I've read that pigeons are really good at escaping from hawks and other birds of prey. However, neighbors may shoot them as pests if the birds go to their property a lot.

I hope you can get some beautiful birds! Best of luck!
