HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! drunk Pullett

This is Patty. Checking my records, she and one other bird, a wyandotte, are the only survivors of the 12 I got at TS 22 wks. ago. As you can see she's not quite right. Small and feathering isn't good either. If you blow the pic up and look you will see that her eye doesn't look right either. It may be that the occular part is going to start in now. Oh joy! For right now she is happy and is able to run with the other chickens. Later on? Who knows.

The wyandotte seem perfectly normal so maybe she's one that is immune to the Marek's. She's laying and as soon as my new incubator gets here I will be gathering her eggs and others to see what I can come up with. Patty? I don't believe she'll ever lay, at least she has shown no signs of it yet.

Building a boy's club is something I plan on getting to before snow fly. I have a few more buildings to get done first but I'll keep pushing. I think I also need to think about a seperate building for the hatches as you have said Leadwolf. I had a room added onto my original chicken house this spring but it is part of that building and I agree, everything needs be seperate and 'clean'.

As for the eggs, Fishnet I have Americaunas, Australorpes, and Golden Comets laying right now. They are from last year and even though exposed to the marek's, didn't die. Maybe because of their age? The young ones that were exposed and are still alive are still not laying except for the wyandotte and 3 hens I hatched this past Feb.. They're mutts as well. If you want eggs I have no problem with that at all. It's funny, I got some really pretty, pretty birds in that Feb. hatch. A white americauna hen and a red and white roo were the best. They're both gone now. Shame because they could hav produced some really nice looking chicks.

You PM me whenever you're ready and I'll find out how to ship eggs. Never done it before, so that in itself will be a learning experience. Hope things settle down for you soon.

wow you guys thanks! I may take you up on the eggs. I am not really picky, muts are some of the most beautiful birds too. I really would love to have a frizzle. they are just so darn cute. lol...

I have never shipped or hatched eggs as well. Always bought chicks. Seriously though, I think if I get a 'bator I am going to be in trouble..... If i do hatch Mareks lain eggs and that was not what was my issue, will it infect the rest of my birds even though I have vaccinated them?

The birds are hatched with immunity to the disease not the disease itself. Marek's is not past down through eggs like some other diseases. The chicks are both safe and immune...

Frizzles, you say? Check out Saran..one of my Marek's resistant chicks from December.

She's a frizzled d'uccle :) She is in with a Serama roo, Lance.

I can't wait to hatch these babies..

No, at least as I understand it. Marek's is basicaly a cancer of chickens. Not every chicken is going to show the symptoms of the disease and can go on to live a normal life. Others can and will get the disease and show the heartbreaking symptoms and die. Even birds that have the vaccination can get marek's and show symptoms and die. [the vaccine doesn't stop the birds from getting marek's, just keeps them asymptomatic, supposedly] It sounds to me that your flock has been exposed. Chances are, the ones that make it, will be fine no matter what.

Also, if you do get an incubator [you should, it's awesome!!!] I stongly suggest you follow Leadwolf's advice and keep them seperate for as long as you can. I plan on doing so, believe me. As she also said earlier, if you know or even think you are having a marek's outbreak you can always give a shot of the vaccine to the ones you already have. Like she said, booster. I would give them antibiotics as well to make sure no secondary infections are going to bring them down. I use Duramycin in their water myself. Any broad spectrum is good. Vitamins and probiotics are something I also use.

Now for the downer, some of your birds may be fine for a long while. They can seem to get better and be recovering. Some do! But, and this is a big one, they may never be productive, ever, just a mouth to feed. They may go for months and then just up and die. I've had quite a few just go down hill over night after not showing symptoms for a long while. You , if you do indeed have marek's, have to take each day as it comes. Tears are a constant thing, no shame in that. You may even have to start culling to stop their pain. Not what I thought I was signing up for but there it is. If it is marek's, there is pain for these birds. Think of sciatica for the leg and wing symptoms, a blinding ice pick in the eye headache for the occular. Not a pleasant thought.

Now the good news that we both just heard from Leadwolf. If these birds survive and can reproduce......WOW!!! We have Super Birds. They should be able to take any more outbreaks in stride and give their young the ability to shake off any mutation that may yet show up. What's not to like about that? Keep the faith and keep going forward. It's all we've got now.

Actually, the vaccine only prevents the tumors from forming. It doesn't stop the paralysis, wasting and other nasty things associated with the disease. All birds that have been exposed will be carriers. My only goal is to get birds to live, at this point that is all that matters to me.

What a beauty!!! I don't have any good pics of the birds I have. Another thing to add to the list, lol. I have a roo from my Feb. hatch who's name is Suki. He's an ameraucana and I think Maren mix. He has a bit of fluff on the back of his head that reminds me of a sumo wrestler, hence the name, lol. I'll have to get some of him, he's a real beauty. I'm hoping he'll breed true as he is really something else.

GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yea, the babies will be just so nice looking I bet. I want a Serama pair. I only have one coop though, and dont think they would fair well with my regular size guy 'Bird.

You don't want a frizzle pair. You just want a frizzle pullet to put in with your smooth rooster or, give a frizzle rooster some smooth hens. A double dose of frizzle makes a frazzle. Not good! The feathers are so brittle that they break off and the poor chicken is bald :(

I just love your white cochins :)

Here is a pic of one of my roosters..he is a d'uccle X silkie...I think he is gorgeous!!! He, too, is out of the immune hatch
