I'm sorry this has happened to your duck. Sounds like she may have stabbed herself on something even a stick poking into her could cause this. Follow Eggcessives info.
It's only till the ducklings are adults the coop situation isn't great so i felt it was better for them to not be stuck in a tight space with all the adult birds who aren't their mom's.One thing that is bothering me though is you say they are free ranging 24/7 how do you do this without predators carrying them off?
I mostly worry about neighborhood cats getting them, all of the neighbors pretty much have dogs that are outside that bark at things so Im sure they help keep things away.
There's also lots of prairie dogs and rabbits for things to hunt and no trees so not many hawks living close by. When the ducklings are adults and we get our second coop back up I'm gonna start locking them all up at night possibly sooner.
