Help!!! Found a 'something' on my roosters back

Hello,
I was just checking my rooster over for mites etc. and I found a strange growth sticking up on his back, whilst I was looking through his tail feathers. There also seems to be a small amount of yellowish goo on his feathers around it. Can anyone shed any light on what it is?
I will probably get him booked in at the vets on Monday but just wanting an idea of what it is/could be, and possible treatment options.
I have posted some pics below as I don't really know how to describe it properly.

If this is towards his back end, on his tail, it's his preen gland. It produces oils and it's supposed to be there.

ha, yep, that's a preening gland. you'll find it on every chicken. (i hope)
