HELP! hatching egg open membrane

I am currently freaking out and trying to desperately fix what Ive done! All chicks are hatching great all except one. I figured I lost it as its almost the 23rd today and chicks are working their way out . . . other than this one egg. I decided to lightly crack open this egg, maybe he was stuck or just dead? and as I did this the membrane broke. I can see movement in the egg, Ican see the yolk sack attacked to the belly of the chick, and the blood vessel! I put a wet paper towel over the open membrane so nothing will dry out... did I just kill this chick? Im not sure why hes so behind everyone and I feel horrible.! Im not sure what else to do. Ive been trying to find similar situations to no avail.

Sounds like your bator temp is off.. Did you use calibrated thermometer? Are they your eggs? What day did the other hatch on? What breed?

It may or may not be fine still.. hard to say for sure.. each time is a new learning situation.. I've had both good and bad results from trying to help.

Thanks for the Reply! Ill post a picture Once I figure out how to! I can fit 12. I lost 3 not including this one. This is my second time hatching I believe I have the degree set at 99.5 I do also have a thermometer and hydrometer in the incubator. Last time I only hatched two out of 12. Im not sure what breed they are as I have mixed ladies... not sure if thats bad or not. they began pipping yesterday afternoon or so. They are all pretty much out other than this guy. Reason why i opened the egg and saw that!

Just for future reference if you have to check on a egg/chick a small nail hole in the air sack can show a lot. Is your incubator forced air or still air? Still air needs to be kept a few degrees warmer. I think the chick has just as much chance of hatching as it did before the hole.

It is forced air, has a little fan. I just hope hes okay I really wasnt expecting a live chick!

I didn't realize it was bleeding.. I thought the blood vessel was only "seen".

I'll be surprised if that one does make it. But have not yet purposely "euthanized" an embryo, if that's even a thing. Maybe keep humidity as high as possible this late if there is any chance.. is my best suggestion.

Good tip by the other poster about checking the air cell portion if you feel the need to check again in the future.

Sounds like your hatch rate went up significantly compared to the first time, Congratulations!

You MIGHT be having a cool spot that slowing development.. to combat that and keep hatch frame tight, I move eggs to a random new spot either daily or every couple days regardless of which bator, forced or still air. The biggest hazard of course is dropping one during handling.. which I handle for candling and such already anyways.. so the benefit far outweighs the risk to ME, and indeed a tighter hatch frame was achieved.. nothing is hatching HERE on day 23, with eggs from known stock. But that's many years in now.. I have seen other people have wildly late hatches maybe even until day 25.. despite not being common or desired.. Sometimes life finds a way regardless of what we/I think!

Barnyard cross can be a bonus when hatching.

I would close the hole. Put something like a small piece of parchment paper or similar over the hole and put a piece of tape over the paper to hold the paper in place. That has happened to me. Sometimes they make it and sometimes they don't. I agree you temperature may have been off some. If you used a still air incubator, they do have hot spots and cool spots, the hottest spots being directly under the heating element. Did you hand turn of use a turner?

It that is a piece of membrane next to the hole, if it is put it over the hole in the egg and then put a piece of tape over it. The chick looks to be 2 or 3 days away from hatching.

If you still have some shells from the other chick that have hatched, I have done this before, put a piece of egg shell over the hole in the egg and again put a piece of tape over it to hold it on. I have also put a piece of egg shell slightly larger than the hole and used liquid bandage around the edge to keep the shell in place. Good luck...
