Help - hen barely walking and found hole in her side

If it stinks it needs a good flushing out. It’s got to be full of bacteria and it looks like it’s been there a few days by the pictures. I’d pack it with neosporin after flushing it out. Warm salt water would help to wash it if you don’t have anything else. I’d also start her on some antibiotics ASAP. It’s a good thing it’s winter or it might have gotten worse pretty fast.
Betadine would be best to clean it. Drug stores carry it.

Chlorhexidene (Hibiclens) and Povidone Iodine in the first aid aisle of WalMart are good to weaken with water for initially disinfecting a dirty wound. You can use a large syringe, a turkey baster, or an ear syringe. If you don’t have that, a kitchen sink sprayer can be used with some dishwashing liquid with a low pressure. After that I would dry it, and use antibiotic ointment.

After that I would use the Vetericyn twice a day then the antibiotic ointment again. A systemic antibiotic would be a good idea as well. Do you have any amoxicillin? You can get Fish Mox online, but it may take too long to arrive.

Thank you! I don’t have any amoxicillin :(

Here is a thread I recently was reading about a found abandoned chicken who suffered a horrible bite wound, but wasn’t treated for weeks after the wounds were inflicted. I thought that you and others might want to read and look at the pictures of the rather remarkable healing that occurred with treatment:

She’s now pulling out her feathers around the wound and eating them. Have any idea why?
