HELP How long does pasty butt usually last, distressed chick

I've never had it last beyond 5 days. This year, we put a probiotic powder in the water from the git-go, and we only had one chick that tried to paste up. She never pasted up completely, and it cleaned off easy. In three days, she was just fine. Probiotic powder may be better when they're that young vs. yogurt. We just put 1/2 tsp./quart. I'm a believer!

I'm also a believer I treat all my animals naturally with pro/prebiotics, natural wormers ect, where did you get what you used and whats it called? next batch I'm trying it. TY Kim

My chicks are two weeks old and have never had pasty vent how much longer do i need to keep checking them?

I've been using Broiler Booster, 1/2 tsp/gal of water, since I got my 16 chicks. Yesterday, I had to clean off 2 of them's butts, today I'm already seeing 1 w/ a smudge back there. How does a hen handle this? I ground up oatmeal for them, but now I wonder how much of it they should get. I have been using a sprinkle of baby grit on their food every so often and have given them scrambled egg (both suggested by Murray Mc.). I have to work, so I"m out the door soon and won't be watching them (dh watches, but his health isn't good and I don't think he'd do more than call me if something happened). When I washed the 2, I forgot about the oil/vaseline, but those 2 look okay this morning. Should I do anything more than what I'm already doing? Their area is 6' by 8' with half of it sheltered w/ heat lamp and the other half open to the outdoors, so overheating shouldn't be the issue.

OMG! I spoke to DH and asked about the pasty butts. He put about a cup of ground oatmeal out for them! I was sprinkling a bit on the starter food, but now they've got an awful lot! Will it harm them? I won't be home for another 3-4 hours!

Well, they ate all the oatmeal and aren't dead, so I guess it's fine. Only 2 this morning with a smudgy bottom, but it's not more than just discolored. Wow, are they growing fast.

I am outside now with my two week old babies they are doing something i have never heard of they have dug a small indention in the ground and they are laying in it and shuffling their feet around like they cant get up does anybody know about this

Carolyn1, do you think they are dust bathing? Mine are 1 week old today and have cleared patches of grass away to the dirt and just lay in it. If it wasn't so cool, I would think they were enjoying the cool dirt. Oh, ha ha, I just had a thought--are they scratching? It seems so strange to see them actually scratch like a big chicken.
