Day 35 update:

Most of the babies are about two weeks old now, and we have at least 2 who looks like they might become tailless! I am so excited! Everyone else’s tail feathers are beginning to come out, but these don’t show any sign of having tail feathers yet, and one is an Americauna. If he’s a rooster, my greatest dreams will be fulfilled!! Fingers crossed! That’s what I was hoping for!

EDIT: I found a third, also an Americauna. Hallelujah!!!

Compare to the tail feather development of everyone else:

Finally, we have only had one MINOR case of pasty butt, which is astounding! So far, we are thrilled with their overall health, and we are bringing them out to socialize with us on the lawn at least 2-3 times per week. They love it!!

:love

So you think you may have some strong Araucana genes mixed in there, causing the possible absence of a tail?

Well, Dude Rooster was the ONLY tailless to ever come out of Townline Hatcheries that they know of, so I do think he got just the right lineup to bring out that Araucana heritage.

I’m thinking that I might someday pick a rarer bird and start breeding, and I love Araucanas, but I have to research them to see if they are cold hardy enough to raise up here in Michigan.

We are on vacation, so I have a friend going over to socialize with the babies every other day. ❤️❤️ Friends are a lifesaver—like you all!!!

Actually, yes! I'm having trouble right now with one of the chicks, and I'm starting a thread over in the sicknesses/injuries part of the forum...

Also, I have a pretty significant cross beak. But that's not my biggest problem.

We did not have worms. Yippee!! But Little Miss Crossbeak, the chick that was so malpositioned in the hatching process, has pretty severe crossbeak. I've started a new thread to get some advice. Last week, I was determined to euthanize her, but yesterday I hand fed her 5 or 6 times, and I started weighing her this morning to see if I'm making any progress at all.

So the thread for her is here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...-and-can-i-train-her-to-eat-sideways.1260866/

She may not be much longer for this world. I've tried clipping her beak (which helped slightly), and now we're handfeeding via syringe. But I can't keep this up!

I had a serama cockerel with a slight cross-beak. I trimmed it a time or two, but he was eating fine, so I let it go. Didn't plan to keep him long. Well, I still have him, almost a year later, and noticed that his beak is fine now. I can tell the bottom half is just a smidge slanted, but the top covers the whole bottom now, where it only covered about three-quarters of it before. Its like he healed himself!
Going to check out your new thread....
