Moved my 5 week old chicks out of their brooder box the other day, they're now in a large shed with hay on the floor, the first few days they seemed fine, however last night i ran out of food so they've been without food for the past 10 hours or so until i could get to the shops this morning and buy more. Everything seemed normal when i checked on them this morning, and again when i got home from the shops and put food in for them. however 10 minutes after i gave them food i noticed some of them jerking their heads in an unusual manner... I did some googling to figure out why they might be doing that, and now i'm concerned that they (all or some) might have an impacted crop from they hay if they've been eating it... ugh first time chick raiser mistakes

Now i don't know how to tell if they have impacted crop's or not. They've all just eating a heap of food and now have full crops anyway.

What should I do?
Is there another way i can tell if its impacted crop?
Are they likely to get really sick really quickly?
If i need grit, I don't live close to shops, and i don't have any grit, so i can't go into town to buy some today... could i use dirt/stones form my garden?

Sounds like they might have eaten too much too fast.

My guess is that it would pass, but definitely heed other opinions as well.

Check in the morning when their crops should be empty. If they aren't, then you have a serious problem.

Thanks. Really hope they just over-ate

Do you think I should remove their food again? If so should i do it now (its mid afternoon where i live right now) or later tonight?

Thats okay, I left the food with them. They are all fine now, their crops emptied okay thank goodness, guess i'm just a bit of a worry wart
