Help me pick out a modern game trio! Who is typey-est?

Hi,

I just bid on birchen modern game trios on eggbid and kinda won. The guy had 4 trios to sell and the winning bidder was supposed to be able to take as many trios of their pick of birds as they liked at that price and the the runner up would get their pick ect until the trios are gone. Well that was my understanding and the seller's understanding but not eggbid's.... apparently the top four bidders each get to buy 1 trio at their bid price, the high bidder (not me) gets first pick of birds. Fortunately for me, but bad for the high bidder I bid twice and so I can get two trios: the second and the last pick.

So...I know nothing about moderns, only that I love their long legs and necks, lacey little chests, and bright little expressions. I need your advice - of the birds pictured, who would you pick and why? I don't know yet which ones the high bidder is picking so I need a couple choices. For the last trio I get what's left over. five original birds are older and from the Sallees, the others are the best of their offspring. there is one hen not pictured. He says they are nice and typey though the color is variable on the young, you can not get type if it is not there. What do you think?

Also if anyone is a fancier of moderns and is willing to chat with me so I can learn more, I would love that!

No opinions? I just found out the top bidder is taking the bottom cock & hens 542 and 546. Those would have been my top pick too. I just found out the hen not pictured is an 07 momma from the sallees.

I don't like how the spurs look on that first roo/cockerel. They curve upwards. You may want to check to see if that is a fault.

He better not squat with those crazy spurs.

Are you looking to show them? If so, make sure you pic a cock that is dubbed. Have you looked in the Standard of Perfection? It is hard to see the lacing on their chests with the way the pics are taken. There should be a narrow strip of lacing there but not too much lacing. I know the pullets comb should be very small. If I get a chance I will take a pic of a birchen pullet that I have that just took ETA: reserve champion bantam, not champion bantam, sorry about that.

I would like to show moderns, but I may show ones I breed from these. I have read the standard but not being knowledgeable it's hard to get an idea of what to look for without seeing examples. The cockerals are not dubbed yet because they hatched in late 08. I am interested in breeding so I will have to learn to dubb anyway. I'd love to see a pic of your champion bird!

How long can moderns be expected to breed? Should I pick younger ones? If that is the going theory I'll probably get stuck with the older ones for the second trio of what is left over.

Try and get in touch with NYRED, this person is a judge. I think they have a good eye based on responses on here to other members. I am not an expert by any means, I am just learning about them myself. I will get a pic in a little bit.

They all look real nice. I think it would be hard to pick. They are supposed to have tight feathers on the tail. You can go ahead and buy an undubbed cock, thats not thast important. You can dub yourself. I will pic some I like>>>>>

Thank you Tiki! Cock 549 is lovely but do you think his chest is too far forward? Or is he just over posing? I would have taken the bottom cock but he is spoken for.

The short -short answer- The 06 Cock and then #552&540

The longer answer- These birds have condition issues and it is hard to tell from these pictures just which one has the best type, but I do know that #549 male is the worst.
Most of the females are dark capped and have no lacing, you help that out by using a over laced male. Also the face color is suppose to be dark (mulberry) not ashen.
Just because a male can be dubbed doesn't mean that you should ignore his comb. With most moderns you are breeding for Females.
I would only get 1 trio and raise as many as you can and then keep only the best trio from them.
