Help me please! My poor duck!!!!

Yes I think lubricating eye drops would be more gentle and moisturizing than contact solution. This is probably more of what you all are referring to.
I think contact solution is fine as long as it is the sterile saline. A basic contact solution is only sterile saline. This is perfect for cleansing wounds. It also has a closing lid. Better than making your own with a water bottle because it closes. The lubricating solution, while soothing I'm sure, won't do a good job cleaning. Standard sterile saline is what we use in medicine for humans.

All lubricating eye drops are a sterile saline solution. Just with other soothing ingredients and a lid. Saline solution stings like chit is all. ;) But either work just fine!:highfive:

Usually they are propylene glycol or polyethylene glycol but also can contain mineral oil, boric acid, sodium hydroxide, HCL; sometimes in combinations - and small containers too - that would be an expensive wound wash! I put sterile saline in open wounds all day long at work and maybe one in 50 will ever say it stings or withdraw from it. I do remember putting saline in my eyes though when I was wearing contacts and if they were irritated, I can remember a stinging sensation too. :thumbsup

Wow, I've been offline all day. I'm so sorry about your girls injury! (my bet is a chicken did it, little peckers!) Good info given, I have nothing to add but moral support. And :hugs

I'm not sure how she will get along without an eyelid, but logic would make me think a duck would do better without one than a chicken, since they regularly rinse their heads.

@WVduckchick, @shawluvsbirds, @CayugaJana, and everyone else who has helped me, after a few days of recovery, Jemima's eye is looking great! Swelling has gone down considerably, the skin shrunk, and the bloody spots are scabbing over. I am so relieved she didn't go blind in that eye as I feared! The drakes have been locked up the whole time and hate it
