It looks like your chick may have a slipped (Achilles) hock tendon. Have a look here:

So sorry about your baby. Many times chicks and chickens can overcome all kinds of disabilities as long as the chick can still eat and drink. You might keep him right near the food and water so he has access to it all the time. Watch that he doesn't get trampled by the others. He may get through this, but watch that he is not suffering later on down the road as you may need to put him down. I hope he does make a full recovery. :hugs

My chick is still able to eat and drink and I'm not sure abt it having slipped hock tendon, I'm also too scared to push it back in like the article said, because I might make it worse

I wouldn't do anything if I was unsure. So since you are nervous to do this, don't do anything. Keep the chick warm, make sure she is eating and drinking well and if at any time you think the chick is suffering, you may need to put her down. But she may recover on her own. Chickens have amazing abilities to heal. Just keep an eye on her and give her all the love.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your chick, hope it recovers.

Welcome to BYC. I thought I should respond to your post since I had a chick with a slipped tendon 2 years ago. It started when he was 9 days old, and had one leg bent up at the hock and hopped on the other leg. After researching myself I thought it was a slipped tendon, and I took him to the vet. The vet confirmed that it was a slipped tendon. He held the chick so that I could see both hocks at the same time. The injured hock was much bigger than the normal one. The vet said it grew that way, and said he could not do anything to repair it.

So I took the chick home and kept him with the others as long as I could. Long story short, he is not here today.

What I could have done differently if I knew what was wrong and what to do sooner, is to have made some kind of splint to keep the leg straight while he grew. Don't know if that works. By the time I researched the condition, and took him to the vet his leg had been in that position for a few days, and the leg had become fixed in the bent position, and I couldn't straighten it. From my research the splint has to be placed right away while the joint can still be straightened out.

I would search this website for a thread on slipped tendon. Possibly someone had successfully used a leg splint.

I definately would not try to push it back into place either for fear of making it worse. Hope you can find proper help for your chick.

Thanks to those of you who helped. I found a vet that could take a look at it. He tried to fix the leg back in but it didn't work. He told me that the chicken was born slightly deformed but gave me some antiseptic to wipe on the wounds
