My Barred Rock chicken somehow got impaled by a 1/2" thick stick. It was about 1 1/2" deep and was on the inner thigh between the skin and the muscle. It has been removed. No blood, but some oozing. She has been bandaged and brought inside, but I'm not sure what else needs to be done. Do I apply antibiotic ointment? Should I get internal antibiotics? How long should she be removed from the coop?
Thank you!

Do you have any blue coat. It is a medicine you spray on a wound to keep it from getting infected. It has worked for me in the past. Also vetricyn spray is good to clean wounds, but it is expensive. Antibiotic ointment would be good, if you don't have either of those. Hope the chicken is ok!

Oh, also you may want to rinse it out with peroxide before you put the antibiotic ointment on, just to get anything out of the wound. I know some people don't like using peroxide because it slows down skin regrowth, but if you dont have anything else to clean the wound, it works. I just wouldn't use it long term, but once would be fine. This is just my opinion of course.

Cleaning the wound out with antibiotic ointment is the best plan. If it was just under the skin, she should be perfectly fine, just watch it for infection. I wouldn't go for internal antibiotics just yet, probably not needed.
I'm not sure I'd confine her inside. You absolutely have to coat the wound in something (bluekote is good) so it won't look like a wound to the other chickens, otherwise they'll peck at it. If you can keep things clean, she should be fine outside. Puncture wounds normally get infected because of bacteria already inside, not because of exposure to something.

Welcome to BYC. Do you have betadine, chlorhexidene (Hibiclens,) Vetericyn, or hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound? Peroxide is not good to use more than once, but it may be useful to flush out the wound to clean it, if you don’t have any of the others. Plain non-painkiller neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment twice a day to the wound. Separate her in a dog crate (with food and water) but keep her in with the other chickens. Can you post any pictrues of the wound?

Thank you all so much! She is eating, drinking and acting like she's recovered from the initial shock. I got the stick out cleanly. I'm going to clean and put her out. I have Pick-no-more, however the wound is not visible, inside of thigh. It says external use only. I'm going to take a chance and put her back out since they're going to sleep soon anyhow.

I'm not able to take a picture and hold her at the same time:(.

GET SOME GOOD QUALITY COLLOIDAL SILVER I RECOMEND MESO BRAND , and soak the wound as much as possible , and keep it bandaged , that should do the trick in no time , its better then any antibacterial stuff , I use it on my self and all my animals you can drink it to for bad teeth or any other problem is a super cure & works very fast …!!

Diannastarr..
Do you look like an alien yet? All bluish-grey? Are any of your animals alien looking yet? I read somewhere that colloidal silver has side effects, one being, that it might turn you bluish- grey!!! Omg!!! Can you just jimagine a bunch of grey aliens running around that are really just a bunch of humans that had side effects from colloidal silver?!!

Missmindy..
Anyways, back on topic!!! Sorry to hear about your baby! I would probably treat the wound as already stated by the other's.. One possible scenario, might end up with a beautiful alien chicky running around all bluish-grey!! I wouldn't worry though, its probably just a rare human side effect..
Hope your chicky gets better!!
