Help my neighbor said my chickens are being loud :(

I definitely feel that because chickens or ducks for that matter aren’t something that people are used to seeing everyday (because they live in a city, town, hamlet) or they haven’t grown up with...they tend to complain more...

A dog barking or cats meowing people are kind of desensitized too because dogs/cats are everywhere & have been for ages. Where a chicken sings a song that persons ear catches it because it’s different...

Your going to have to address the issue. I would definitely let her know that you are working on it & let her know how you plan on working towards a solution.

Sound barriers would be great & rehoming the ring leader may be a necessity.

@LaFleche You know I actually would love quail, but the local feed mill only offered chickens. I recently got a McMurry magazine and was looking at the quail in the future I might consider ordering some from there.

Most people who get into quail get a small incubator and start by buying hatching eggs online. There are quail farms that specialize in that and quail eggs have a much better hatch rate when shipped than chicken eggs do.

@Brenda Jones thats a sweet set up! I will tell the hubby about that. On occasion I drive through Sualt Ste Marie because the flights from Canada are cheaper!!! I live in between Marquette and Munising 🙂 so about a 2.5 hr drive from you I think.
@MIgardengal, That's awesome that you are so close. I go up to Marquette every so often. We have some friends in Houghton too. I would like to give the girls a larger roost and nesting area, but we had to get something quick as we got them in late summer, so we just got a coop from Tractor Supply... they REALLY over estimated how many standard sized hens the coop could hold  or I have giant chickens :lau

They use industrial mesurments, which are between 18 and 24 inches per bird

Rehome the choir leader.
Yep. I just had to re-home two RIR’s, one I hatched, because they were aggressive and LOUD. Not just the egg song, just loud chatter all day long. I got an automatic door on the coop to open early because if they woke up and couldn’t get out they were insane. Everything has settled down. My re-home traded me two Easter pullets for the RIR’s.

There are always bunches of coturnix quail on my local Craigslist. You could try that. The boys have a fairly quiet infrequent crow (provided you don’t have a bunch of them) — they stand up tall and yell “Look-at-meee!”. The hens are almost silent. They make a cricket chirp noise when distressed. But oh, their egg song — it’s such a soft, beautiful, almost mournful sound. :love I could listen to that all day.
