I’ve got a flock of birds that live completely free range and roost in the trees. Out of this flock I’ve got 11 new chicks who are housed at night, but out early morning. I checked on them last night as the chicks were going to bed and I noticed 4 of them have been beaten up pretty bad by something. They are around 2 months old. I have a cockerel in my free range flock and currently he’s suspect no1. No deaths and no serious injuries but more than enough to cause concern.
Any ideas?

The cockerel is a possibility especially if the beat up chicks are cockerels that may have challenged him. Monitor closely when you first release the chicks to determine the aggressor.

Keep an eye on them during the day and see if you can pinpoint the bully. At night check on them and see where they are roosting. Can you keep the chicken door open so they can get out right away when needed? And do you have a safety section fenced off that only they can squeeze into and get away?
