The breeds need to be arranged alphabetically, with the correct APA breed name for the title. Too many "hey folks this if the xyz chicken thread!" type titles.
One difficulty with this endeavor is the following:
The general 'anti hatchery bird' climate that exists. As a result of this, there are kindly, not-so-kindly 'put-downs' of such birds and their keepers.
Such are rather 'shooed away' from or 'belittled' away from getting involved in threads, because of the reactions and comments of those who keep 'real' Silkies, 'real' Rhode Island Reds, 'real' Wyandottes.
The upshot of this, I fear, will be the further marginalization of those who keep 'hatchery trash'.
This is sad, but I see it as inevitable.
There is almost a need for a whole new 'thing' just for keepers of hatchery birds.

The Breed Index has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a bird is pet or show quality, or will be purchased from a private breeder or a hatchery. It is a resource tool for people who are wondering what breed will best suit them and their individual situations. Even if you order birds from a hatchery, you still need to be familiar with what breed you may choose to order. As far as I know, none of the hatcheries sell "mutts" - they sell purebreds. They may not be show quality, but they are purebred nonetheless.
I would have pages showing hatchery & pet birds vs show quality of the same breed.... No disrespect to another Orloff person, but one of those birds is NOT " spangled" but more a mottled. If people want to learn about the breeds, there should be at least semi-accurate photos of them. JMHO

We want to have the best picture representations of the breeds as possible! One of the changes we're making is to allow more people to participate in updating breed pages, so over time we can continue to add better pictures as well as better / updated information!
We rely on the members, so if you (or anybody) has better pictures to submit, please keep them in hand for when we move to the new system!
pic wise just let me know. Most all of my stuff is being used by feathersite as well.

I go through some of the pages for the breed I understand pretty well and see varieties listed that are NOT recognized and have no standards while some recognized varieties are not. What I am seeing is Mille fleur Cochins and Lavender(Self Blue) listed. The problem with that is that they are still works in progress. Improvement has been made but none are within 5 years of being recognized. Most sellers do list that these are project eggs/chicks/birds though some do not. Coopa hit it on the head about Large Fowl (not Giant) Cochins and bantams is great. Different standards. Some varieties only recognized by ABA , some by the APA, and some by Both ABA & APA.
One last thought is that varieties probably should be listed in some sort of order. Alphabetically seem best to me or by the year the governing body admitted that variety. What do you do with Frizzles?
