I have 2 6-7 week old chicks. The feed store person said they were Black Giants but they grew crests/tassels on thier heads about 3 or so weeks ago which suprised the heck out of me. They also have no combs to speak of that I can see but it's difficult to get a close look at them because they are a bit flighty and don't like being held.( they both had pasty butt thier first week and a half and they learned that being handled is uncomfortable. Guess they didn't like being cleaned.) I also have no idea if they are Roos or Pullets. Hope you can help me figure what these chickies are as far as breed and sex?

I am completely new to keeping chickens ( only 5 -6 weeks, just like my chicks). So, is it possible for a 5-6 week old Black Jersey Giant chick to have a tassel or do you think the people at the feed store made a mistake? I am so confused. . Looking forward to a reply.

Also, if you have any idea wether they are going to be roos or pullets, I would appreciate it because I am stumped. The kids named them Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum...not sure I'm keeping those names though.

Hi, I bought six Black Giants and I got a odd ball exactly like yours. I was advised it could be a polish crested or a Crevecoeur. I looked up both breeds and It looks more like the Crevecoeur. Here is a picture of mine. I have named him Elvis. Cute little guy and hangs with the Giants just fine. Can't wait to see what it becomes.

Unfortunately , I have no idea what hatchery these 2 came from as it was my husband who picked up the chicks at the feedstore, and he didn't ask. I did look at the very bottom of thier feet, They aren't bright yellow, they just have a dull yellowish tinge but also some pinkish flesh color too. How pink are Crev./Polish feet supposed to be? Are they supposed to be pink from the ankle down or just the soles of thier feet? The one chick is now growing a few longer feathers that stick out on his/her cheeks. I still don't see any combs on either of them because they aren't the most co-operative when being handled, but I will keep my eye out for the type that polish and Crevs. have. It's funny that they have turned out to be either Crevs. or Polish as I thought we were getting 2 Black Giants. We thought we were getting vanilla and ended up getting fruity with sprinkles. I will post more pictures in a few weeks when hopefully they will have matured enough for someone to make a better guess at what breed they are. Ty for the info

Well, I think the mystery is solved on my 2 black crested chicks. I found out they come from Ideal who breeds crevs and polish. I think they only carry the standard polish so they wouldn't have any all black polish. My chicks carry all the traits of Crevecoeur's except the earlobe coloration and body size which I am hoping will develop in the next few months since they are still somewhat young. So I am 99% sure they are crevs. Sadly one of my pair is a roo and he fought with my EE roo and lost because he is smaller. He lost some of his roo tail feathers and has a little bald spot. It's was kind of depressing walking into the run in the morning seeing his beautiful feathers blowing around : ( So, sadly he is going to a friend who is starting her own flock. Ty again to all who helped me with info on them.

This is my Elvis , not sure if it is boy or girl yet. But he came with our Jersey Giants also. We have come to the conclusion that he is a Crevecoeur . He is 14 weeks old. Now I will have to find mate. .
