Help! Peacock reacting after injection...

It will be my first attempt using the mortar and pestle and the liquid... kind of exciting!

-Kathy

I used a mortar and pestle for awhile to crush allergy tablets for the old mare... about a gazillion little generic claritin...

I'm not here much, just saw this thread. Yes, Tylan does muscle damage. I have heard of hog carcasses being rejected at slaughter from it. Most folks recommend injecting subcutaneous between the wings I believe.

When I first had a turkey with a swollen sinus some time back in the 90's, someone in another group told me to use a larger gauge needle to suck the gunk out, inject Tylan 50 right into the sinus (with a new needle/syringe), then wait 2 days to see if you need to do it again. The few birds that I did that to (I think 2 turkeys and 1 pea) had residual swelling the next day and on day 2 looked fine. I never did a second dose. Thinking about it now I wonder if that would contribute to antibiotic resistance but it's been about 5 years since I saw any sinus problems in any of my birds. The peacock was half grown and I think had it when I got him... the person I bought him from did offer to take him back and confirmed she had a few birds with it. I still have him and really love him. I never had an outbreak here where more than one bird was affected even though they were all kept together so maybe I was dealing with something different and less virulent?

If all of the antibiotics don't work, you could try treating for a fungal infection, and I'd be more than happy to send you some ketoconazole.

Good to know about the Tylan and IM injecting! My bird is showing no improvement with the Baytril. I will probably switch to theTylan tomorrow and give them three days to respond.

After showing no improvement with the Baytril I gave them one day off and now have completed four days of Tylan 200. Kathy, I may not need that ketoconazole after all! The one bird with the lesser symptoms is not showing any of the symptoms and the one that went to the vet is not sneezing at all and only mouth breathes about half the time. I expect them to both make total recoveries. The plan is to give them both some probiotics and then this weekend when it get warmer reintroduce to their outside pen.

Since they were feeling better they got to have some visitors.

And some more even greater news, the vet called with the report on the fecal exam I took in yesterday, NO COCCI, NO WORMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the cocci and worms from ALL pens have been eradicated!!!
