HELP! Peaowl with bad eye opens mouth shakes head.

i am going to buy tylan 200 today. If it doesn't work i will take him to a vet. How long will it take to see a difference in his condition?

Most of mine showed rapid improvement. More than half of my 21 peas showed symptoms so I treated them all. A couple of them I had trouble with the injection and probably went through both sides of the skin and missed one of the birds completely. The ones I did administer the shots correctly showed improvement within a couple of days and cleared completely within five days. The one I know I missed totally I gave another shot on the third day and again three days after that, it was pretty sick by then. We also had to clean out the eye with saline and Q tips, and put Neosporin, (the regular kind without the pain reliever) on it about three or four times.

We did not notice any change in the eye color but you may be seeing the haw, that is the inner eyelid that protects the eye. It kind of threw me for a loop at first too.

Oh, and if it is the respiratory infection that it sounds like, look down the throat for some white cottage cheese looking stuff and or some mucus, another sure sign.

I think I was sold a sick bird to begin with. When i came to pick him up he was in a 4x4 Ft cage and his food and water were infested with bees. I thought I was getting a good deal from someone who just didn't want to care for a peacock but when i got it i noticed a tiny bit of cloudiness in one and I thought it meant the peafowl was just blind out of one eye.I guess that's what I get for not paying attention to the little things. I even knew birds don't show that they are sick. I hope I can make him better.

Honeybees did not make your pea sick, if they would I wouldn't have any peas as I have over thirty hives near my pens. They do not bother each other. I feed my bees right near the coops and the birds are not interested in them in the slightest. Consider this; bees live in a food container, a sterile environment entirely coated with an antiseptic paste they make called propolis. Honey itself is antibacterial and can be used to treat burns and other injuries.

Here is a good picture of a haw on my sick peas eye. She is doing fine now. The haw was protecting the eye while it was swollen by infection.

Take some pictures of your birds face and post it here. I have a blind peacock and his eyes are not cloudy they are actually pink. Can your bird get stung by a bee, yes it can and it can also get bitten by a mosquito as well. Mine got stung by a wasp last year and it's entire face was so swollen but he healed with some tylan

I'm sorry I think there was a misunderstanding. I love bees and i wanted to start a hive at one point and I love watching them. I included the part about the bees because I think that maybe due to the thick layer of bees over its food and water the peafowl didn't want to eat and caused the condition to worsen before it came home with me. I understand that bees are docile and clean, that's why i like to pet them (I know it sounds weird) when they are sitting on flowers. When i was little i would run around putting drops of sugar water on flowers because i thought the bees didn't have enough food. My mom would yell at me for doing that. She said i was wasting the sugar. I was so silly when i was little.

Did your peacock have any white dots in its eye?

There are times of the year when forage is scarce and they will collect grain dust for pollen. Dad used to get so mad when he would feed his horses and the bees would be all over it, usually in February when the temps would get over 45. l would tell him to feed earlier in the day before the bees got out. Dad didn't like getting up early after he retired.

We didn't notice any white spots on the eye, what you see in the picture above is what we saw when we were attending to the eye.

My brother put a beehive up right next to my peas. Never had any trouble until I mowed the grass and it struck the beehive, they went crazy mad stung me three of peas and I ended up getting inside the pen of my peas with a water hose and spraying them ever time one came in. Took a long time everything was soaking wet me peas and bees. Lol the ones that got stung were gasping for air later maybe from the stress of all that was going on. A swelled eye on each male and one female in the head. I gathered up that night and started with bee sting medicine my brother had they were all ok in a few days swelling finally went away. One thing I didn't understand one of mine pulled out feathers on their breast bone. One bald spot. I guess I probably missed a sting is the only thing I could think of. They are all great now no problems. My brother is moving the hive this spring so no more problems I hope.

Two things to never do when mowing around a hive; blowing either the exhaust or grass clippings into the entrance. I can generally mow right in front of the hive, moving quickly, without upsetting them as long as I don't blow anything at the hive. Usually with bees the only time there is a problem is when there is human intervention. In other words, if you don't mess with them they will leave you alone.
