Hi
My rooster that i spent alot of money on came with bumblefoot, the infection has travelled up to his ankle joint,I have kept it clean and it has healed the scab but it seems I sealed the infection in the leg,in hindsight I should have cut the infection out but I didnt, not realizing that what he had until it was too late.Sorry I cant post a pic right now but I will when Im home,I plan to start him on penicillin tomorrow he already is having 2 other anti-biotics but the swelling has not reduced,I cant afford him to die and otherwise he is healthy just cant walk well,my question is-
1.do I cut out the area I think that is infected or is it best left alone and treated with anti-biotics thanks for any help

Here is a pic of the swelling

I've done plenty of bumblefoot surgeries in my 38 years of raising chickens. There is no scab, nor infection that I can see on the footpad.
Since you are already giving him 2 different antibiotics with apparently no effect, I dont believe it's a staph infection which is caused by bumblefoot.
Once staph infection gets to the legbone, it quickly spreads through their system, then death. No amount of antibiotcs will stop it.
I suspect it might possibly be articular gout; possibly too much calcium or protein in his diet...there are other causes as well. A change in diet may help if in fact it's gout. Here's a link for you to read:
