That's why they aren't laying!! It's called a moult. They loose their feathers and replace them with new ones!

It would help to have a picture. Baby chicks can have a few very small areas when they are losing their baby fluff and growing feathers. How old is is/ are the babies? Is it just one chick?
What breed? Can also be mites if it is an older chick..... It can also be feather picking from the other chicks if they are not getting enough protein.
