HELP! Possum in coop

possums can't get rabies...

that said, do yourself a favor and kill it...

For every story of "tame, non-threatening" possum, there's another horror story...

why take the chance? there will never be a possum shortage...

She said this guy is little, just relocate and sure up the coop so no one else gets in.

Depending on where you live, it is illegal to relocate a wild animal. Where I live they would prefer for you to just kill it then letting it go.

It's out of the coop now, but it's loose. Got back on our porch (where there's dog food) and again it got away from us. I was able to get it into a crate and out of the barn, but when i set it down it got out... then easily squeezed right through chicken wire and the other wire fence. I'll have to trap the thing and move it far away.

Good job!!! At least he/she is out of the coop - it is probably terrified and may have just visited the coop for warmth or a snack of chicken food (vs. chicken).

Havahart traps! I myself am against killing animals unless for food or absolutely necessary, and it sounds like this little guy wasn't threatening or mean. Rehome him if you get him.

It's been my experience that possums are afraid of humans, they are not scared of chickens. I've had them hiss at me and lunge, that's why I keep my .45/.410 handy.

Wow, that bugger went right back to the coop! My husband got it contained in a box. Guess we'll be taking it for a long ride tomorrow.

Thanks for all your advice and help!

I've had to chase possums and skunks out of my coop in the evening on 8 or 9 occasions. I just yell at them and get a long stick. They eat eggs if they can find them. I'm sure they'd munch on a chicken if they could get one. I have to make sure to shut the coop door before it gets dark, and then there's no problem.
