HELP - Prolapsed Vent

If you think something is in there, try to work it slowly, but I would try something like mineral oil or even kyjelly to lubricate that - you may need to insert a finger and lube her up. Then try to work it out - I really don't know what else to use but fingers.

Sounds like a 2-person job.. I will enlist my hubby when he gets back from travel tomorrow and we'll see what we can do. I'm concerned about what is 'sticking out' of her vent... and if I will do more harm by getting in there and trying to get whatever the blockage is out.

Yes, I agree with Wyorp Rock to do the soaks once or twice a day. A fissure is just a connector to another pathway that has broken down or become blocked. it can be hard to get them to heal. They can be common in humans between the vagina and rectum, when there is erosion or injury. Any oil or ointment can be used on the vent to keep it moist such as mineral, olive, or vegetable oil, vaseline is safe as well (part of Neosporin ingredients,) even crisco. Honey is good, but may need more frequent application, but it has antibiotic and shrinking properties. The tissue sticking out of the vent could be a collapsed egg membrane or even part of her oviduct or intestinal tissue. We are all pulling for you and your chicken. at any time that she seems to be suffering, I would put her down. Good luck.

She is eating and drinking and walking around her pen.. and she doesn't seem to be in distress.. she was actually much stronger today and trying to hop out of the sink after her bath which didn't work out that well for her w/all of those wet feathers.. lol

I will definitely put her down if she is suffering. And I also just came to the realization that even if I cause damage to her 'internally' while trying to remove the obstruction in her vent... it is just speeding up the inevitable because she can't pass whatever is there on her own. It will be my first cull... I may need to call in for reinforcements ....

Ok, so you guys think it is a "fistula" that formed due to the blockage. That makes sense. I wonder then. Could you try to "push" the blockage out instead of pulling? Like go in through the fistula and try and press the blockage out. I would try to perform that while in a warm tub perhaps the warm water would help relax the muscles and maybe even lessen the discomfort? I also like the pop sickle stick idea, or perhaps a pair of tweezers to grab a hold and pull?

I had to google "fistula".. lol...
Do you think I should try to extract the blockage through both 'areas'? I did try to grab whatever it is that is shown coming out of her vent w/tweezers, but it just fell apart each time, so I couldn't get a 'grip' on it... Not sure if that was because she had been 'soaking' for 15+ minutes and it made it fall apart or not....

I was thinking I would try to do as much as possible in the water as I could... she is very docile in the water and doesn't really put up an fuss when I'm cleaning her while still in the warm water.

That is good if you can keep breaking pieces of it off with tweezers. Tedious work but eventually it might get it all. I was thinking more along the lines of if the fistula formed because of the blockage that maybe if you could fit a finger or something in that hole could you find the blockage and press it out from the inside. Like go in and hook your finger around. Hoping you have smaller fingers than I do!

I'm wondering if the blockage is a lash egg from the description of it breaking up when you try to get hold and pull it. It is going to depend on how big it is as to whether you could insert a finger into the split where poop is now exiting and try to push it through the correct hole.
You are correct though in thinking that whatever it is has to come out or it is going to kill her anyway, so you don't have a lot to lose.
If you use a wooden popsicle stick I would put it in the finger of a plastic disposable glove so that it slides more easily and get plenty of lubricant in there. (not sure what your lolly sticks are made from but here in the UK they are usually wooden)

You are doing a great job so far! I can imagine it must be pretty daunting when it looks so bad, but her behaviour is encouraging.

just gave her another 'soak'..but no deriding
filled a bowl with an Epson salt/hot water mixture
soaked a wash cloth in it and then held the hot wash cloth against the area (rinsing and cleaning as I went)
did this for over 20 minutes...rubbed mineral oil outside...and in...then slathered more honey...
she's back to bed...

going to buy more triple antibiotic ointment tomorrow..
and also planning on trying to get the blockage out and trying to get more dead tissue off...

if i didn't know her backside looked like this...I'd never know it was even going on...
