HELP! Second hen to get bloating/green feces, emaciated breast

Not sure about the Baytril, but I would definitely keep giving the metronidazole. Are you giving that twice a day?

-Kathy

Yes baytril (1 tablet) and the metronidazole (250mg) half in the morning and half in the evening. I'll do baytril as well one more day tomorrow to make it 5 days (but it says you can do up to 8 days) and then continue the metronidazole for the 10 to 14 days.

Ask your vet - I'll pay her/him.

Any idea for a good probiotic to help or should I wait until after the 10 or 14 days, in your opinion. I have that chick probiotic that goes in the water (sav-a-chic) perhaps I'll put that in all of their water just to boost them all. Sometimes they won't drink water with stuff in it, but I'll try.

On day 8 - this past Saturday she did not seem like she was doing any better, so I took her to the vet and he drew so much fluid out of her and it was yellow. He gave me amoxicillian to give her for 7 days. She is clear of e coli or any other issues per the fecal exam. The vet is not a chicken vet, but I told him what Kathy thought it might be in her experience (peritonitis) and that youtube had videos withdrawing the fluid from the abdomen. So, per our instructions, he did what he could and he gave me a discount!

Of course she moves around a lot better and is out of the coop more now, but not really eating much. Is that typical?

She is so skinny. There is food in her crop, it feels like, but she is still pooping nothing except bile and white and fluid. Is that the sign of an impacted crop because of all the time she hasn't been eating because of some much fluid? How does one get things going again to help her along?

Thanks!

What happened with the one you're referencing with the same kind of fluid? Is that the one that you did the baytril and flagyl? Did you save her?
I'm so scared that the other two aren't laying either. I did that grower feed when they had the cocci problem - bad advice!!!

Why won't she eat now that the fluid is off? She pecks, even at bugs, but she doesn't eat them???
She did eat a couple of pieces of bread today when the others were grabbing for it. It seems if I can hand feed all three of them then she will at least eat a little.
Tube feeding I haven't done, but on the one that got attacked by the possum and wouldn't eat, I just opened her mouth and made her eat little tiny balls of bread dipped in pedialyte and mash, it still wasn't enough, but it kept her alive - can I do that?

And my rooster is having bad respiratory problems after the sulfa med for the cocci - it's been two weeks. I find that it happens commonly in humans when they go on a sulfa drug and they give them steroids to calm the inflammation. He is wheezing so bad when he breathes. This happened 2 years ago and I can't remember how I got him past it - I think I did the vapor thing of hot water in the coop. Got any ideas for this - no more antibiotics. I did that for 5 days with a 3-in-1 respiratory pill from Twin City - did nothing. Also did Vet Rx - did nothing. Doing nothing though, it's getting worse.

Thanks!

No food in her crop this morning so she must be eating a little and not bound up or sour. Yeah!
Day #4 of 7 for the amoxicillian so praying for a good outcome. I know she loves that fluid being off of her belly!
The vet said he treated a llama for peritonitis with amoxicillian and he was surprised at the dosage for a chicken!
She needs a bath from a messy butt - at least there is some brown now - fluidy but at least not all green;
I just gave her one on Friday, but I don't want her to get flystrike or be nasty while I hold her two times a day for the amox oral treatment.

I got a warm vapor thingy at Walmart at midnight last night so I can give the rooster some treatments and see if that helps him.
Of course, he'll probably be super ****** I take him away from his hens. :)

I have drained many hens, and some have lived for many months after draining, but others have died while draining and a few days after draining... Just depends on what's causing the fluid to build up. The causes I have see fso far are:

  • Internal laying
  • Oviduct cancer
  • Marek's
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Heart disease/defects

Longest I had one live after draining was about 10 months.

Birds get a *huge* dose compared to other animals... I really think you need to start tube feeding.
