HELP! Sour crop!

The Internet lied! But her doctor called it in so I'm currently waiting at Walgreens.

Mediastatin is only sold by a few online stores that cater to pigeon fanciers, as far as I know.

Nystatin is available in powder, suspension, and cream.

For drugs in general, you usually get the best value with the powder (or tablet) and it has a longer shelf life than suspensions or creams. I'm leery of creams because they're usually intended for topical use and may have excipients that shouldn't be ingested. Oral suspensions are obviously safe for oral consumption.

Monistat is easier to find and probably more effective (less chance of resistant yeast).

One option is Megabac-S which is amphotericin B bound to so complex sugar molecules to make it water-soluble. It's the only OTC form and was developed for parakeets who often have yeast infections of the proventriculus and gizzard, just a little downstream of the crop. It's expensive but it's OTC and one of the most potent anti-fungals available.

If she has a yeast infection, there is a good chance that it's not just in her crop, but also in her mouth and esophagus. I believe that Monistat will only work on the areas that it touches.

Can you call your vet and ask him to prescribe a proper anti-fungal like Nystatin or Diflucan? If you're near Canada, you can get Diflucan OTC.

I did a search for Diflucan here in the US, and found http://www.1800petmeds.com/Fluconazole-prod11223.html?AFFID=MS&ID=543218479 sold for cats and dogs. Would this one work? I was thinking of keeping it on hand in my critter med kit.

It should but it looks like it's "RX Only."

I ordered some sodium benzoate but haven't received it yet. It's used as an alternative to amphotericin B in the aforementioned parakeets. I also found one study where they added it to chicken feed. It's cheap, OTC, and yeast don't develop resistance to it like traditional anti-fungals.

Darn, I thought it was OTC. Interesting reading! So where does the infected feces come from? A new chicken? Or wild birds?

I am not new to chickens, but am new to FF, by feeding FF does it reduce the risk of sour stomach? Or other problems with the croup? I am also going to find the FF thread and ask there too.

I do hope the hen gets better, and soon!!!!!

Did find this, but have no idea if one is better than the any of the others?
Over the Counter Treatments

  • Several antifungal treatments are available without a prescription. These include clotrimazole, miconazole, and tonolfate, which also come in prescription strength versions. These products are available in various forms, such as creams, powders and suppositories.

I purchased the nystatin from Walgreens, her vet called in for the suspension which is fine, I imagine it will be easier for Ginger :). She is not currently eating much at all so we are giving her nutrients and meds via a syringe. Is this a normal Occurance that they don't eat? I know she isn't feeling up to snuff but she is walking around some and haning out. Her comb is red as her waddle the same.
She is going to back to visit Monday. Yes Kathy he is a good vet and he also treats my 10 year old parakeet :). He is very compassionate and humble.
Thanks again to everyone will be checking back on and off throught the day and so on.
