Help Tiny Chick Broke His Leg!*PICS*UPDATE AND NOW HAS SPLAYED LEG!?!

Quote:
Chicks only need grit when feeding something other then just chick starter and it doesn't have to be MEDICATED. The chick starter has everything the chick needs in it already but if you are feeding scratch as well then yes get the fine grit to mix in with the scratch. As far as vitamins go there is Vital which is vitamins and electrolytes you mix in with the water you can find at the feed store or you can get poli visol WITHOUT iron at walmart or a drug store, it is infant vitamins but a little on the spendy side ($11-12 a bottle) I would try to see if maybe the hip popped out of place somehow and try to get it back in place? or splint the leg with something. I hope the lil one pulls thru for you. I too would give it a fighting chance, tooo many people are tooo quick to tell ya to cull them when it is unknown if it is an actual break or just dislocated. Good luck with your baby

He is looking so much better! You have done a great job with him. I think he was probably holding his leg like he was because it just really hurt. It doesn't seem visible disfigured so more than likely it was a hip dislocation or even a sprain of some sort. The fact that he kept eating throughout the whole ordeal indicates that more than likely it wasn't as serious as it may have looked.

silkieowner- I don't think there is anything wrong with your question, nor is your post self-righteous. You have a valid point. Many of us feel as though our chickens are OUR PETS, just like a dog or cat. We are very attached and wouldn't dream of putting them down. As I said before, personal beliefs can never be wrong because they are our own. We do not come here to be judged but to be accepted and hopefully help each other. Some of us forget that every now and again.

AWE!! I'm so glad that your chick is doing better. I'm new at raising chickens, but I hate seeing things like this. This is truely a very happy ending. You did a very good job at caring for this chick. Good Luck to you and the little chic !!

Good job on taking care of your injured little one. And good job to everyone who encouraged you to do just that. I'm really glad to see he/she is doing so well.
