HELP!!! TURKEY HEN PROLAPSED??

Pics
I am sorry for your loss.

I'd like for you to rethink what you feed your birds because feeding that type of feed may be a problem. Especially since you lost her mate recently too.

When you sing that type of feed they can pick and choose which pieces they want.
When they pick and choose different grains they may not be getting a complete balanced diet.
They can also get fat by being picky.
Fat birds are not healthy and fat birds are more prone to having health issues.
Fatty liver disease can kill over night with no warning.
And thank you.. it’s hard. I’ve never been so upset. I loved her so much. So much.

What feeds do you suggest are good for like a big turkey hen? I only have one left now.. what about the turkey grower/ starter
I think a pelleted or crumble complete balance feed is best. If the feed you have is a crumbled feed and not a whole/ cracked grain feed them it's perfect.

Crumbled is always easiet for bigger birds to digest...it is messy and there is quite a bit of loss, but for our bigger pet birds it's worth it to go crumbled.
Once they're over 10 months old, even though laying, its best to drop protein level of feed to prevent health issues.
Always provide oyster shell or some type of calcium.
I only have Chicken and Guinea, but you did all you could with prolapse.
Warm water sits, I use regular canola oil or baby oil as petroleum jelly can ( not always, but have seen it) cause poo build up and constipation. It just collects and during fairy lays mixes or "grabs" the soft shells and can cause more issues.
Don't understand how it why, but jellies seem to create more issues, stick to oils.
She may have had constipation (high protein feed not drinking enough water) and a soft shell (fairy) caught up and couldn't pass.
While there are two ducts there is only one vent and trouble galore when there are digestive issues.
God bless, keep loving her, she's still with you I believe.
Have had a bird or two linger for months after passing over.
Go ahead and laugh y'all but when you feel the weight if a bird plop on your bed, hear pecking and Pittty Pat of bird feet where there is no bird.... I'm a believer❤️
Peep was blessed and so are you to have had each other for her short life.

Once their intestines come out, then it is over.
I’m glad you agree. I was 99.9% sure this was true, but the fear in the back of my mind was that someone with more experience still could have recommended something that could have helped, but I was the only one here and and I told her she was gonna die when there was still something that could have been done. Glad I was right and that euthanasia was the right course of action.

And I wholeheartedly agree on the comment about the feed. Animals, like people, prefer to eat things that taste good to them. There’s lots of hamster foods that are an attractive combination of different seeds and fruit pieces, but you learn quickly that the animal just picks out what it likes and leaves the rest, even if that means it’s malnourished or overweight. As responsible pet parents we have to take the temptation away from them and offer a uniform (perhaps boring) feed that will keep them healthy and happy. (I often wish someone would do this for me, lol) You can always supplement variety with some nice healthy treats and free ranging.

She's beautiful.
She wasn't afraid, she knew you were there for her.
So sad ( for us) when pets pass in our arms, but it's the best way for them.
Thank you so much..
yes exactly.. I’ve bever been with a pet when this has happened, but with her I said I needed to be.. she’s only ever known me her whole life. Leaned on me including when her mate died she got even more attached to me and we had a good day together yesterday.. she was following me like a dog as always and was so sweet. I’ll miss that. I’m glad I was with her, I’m glad I got her there to get it done humanely and quickly for her because she went much more peacefully than I thought, no struggling even one bit.. I miss her.

Thank so truly so much.. it really means more to me than I can say. This wouldn’t of been easy regardless, but the person who helps me get through all my struggles isn’t currently anywhere beside me and it makes it hard. Not to go off subject but my boyfriend of about 4 years is very hands on with these birds and he cared for them too.. and we’ve been doing distance for schooling for a bit and he actually returns back to Cali in just under 3 weeks.. every time I’ve lost someone he’s been amazing about it and so great. And it’s harder when he’s away. It’s rough. But you all are like therapy and it’s helping and is so sweet.
I’ll look at the Turkey grower and send a pic so you guys can tell me what you think and what feed I should pick up maybe from here on out beginning next week?

I really tried all that I knew I could and I still feel helpless now that I couldn’t save her or keep her here or do more.. the second i walked out to check her at night and saw her standing with that big mass popped out.. I started crying so hard and I started calling every place possible till I found the one an hour away that could humanely do this for her.. I knew then she was probably beyond repair and I couldn’t bare to keep her there dealing with it any longer.. even if it hurt me.

She will always be in my heart. And I hope with me. The most special thing is I get to have her ashes, I never thought they would want privately cremate a backyard poultry bird. But the fact that they will I think is so special.. what do you all think of the ashes? I think it’s purely amazing that I can keep her with me wherever I go.. after all she was always with me wherever I was at home. Always by my side

Can they still eat the lettuce I offer? And my Ebony (the last turkey alive) loves her grapes. I give a couple a day or every couple days. It’s her favorite. And can someone recommend good stable laying/ crumble feeds that would be good for her to remain on..? My ducks and geese eat all the crumbled turkey starter at all times and have been fine. We don’t have waterfowl feed here so that’s what they eat. And my bantams little chickens have been on straight TMC.

And yes that’s what terrified me.. was what If I’m doing this and I could of saved her.. it’s still in the back of my mind taunting me and eating away at me.. I just want her here

I didn't read through all the pages, but I did want to share that I personally had one turkey hen prolapse and we couldn't save her either.

It was probably because I fed too many treats like corn and boss because turkeys love these things, but they will make them internally fat which can lead to a prolapse when they start to lay for the season.

I personally feed my turkeys a pelleted All Flock ration that has 18% protein and they get a separate bowl of oyster shells for the calcium needs. I haven't had another prolapse since I severely cut down on the fatty treats.

Sorry you lost yours. Turkeys are goofy birds, and easy to get attached to.
