HELP!!! TURKEY HEN PROLAPSED??

Pics
What a sweet little face she had. I haven't seen a brown turkey before. She was very pretty. I'm glad you have such nice pictures to remember her.

Maybe get that one of you and her together framed and hang it up behind the little footprint box and the ashes when you get them. A small memorial.

The very first picture you posted is really good as well. Such an inquisitive expression. Turkeys have a reputation for being unintelligent, but she looks pretty keen to me.
She was beautiful. They even told me when she came in, that she was so beautiful and so sweet, she was so hand tamed. I adore all of my birds especially the turkeys they have a special place in my heart.

I’m thinking of doing that for sure. I’m glad I have all the pictures of them always to remember, since they were babies. I got both her and her mate shadow in a hatch along with another Tom who passed a year ago and the other hen ebony who I still own to this moment, she’s the last of the group. Peeps identical twin sister.. my last turkey. I’ll cherish her.

She was amazing

You are so sweet and so right. Thank you oh so much. She’s with her sweet boy now <3 they can be together again. Never apart, I told him I’d protect her till she returned to him.. I did my very best at that.
I know I’m grateful for that. I never thought they would do it for a turkey. But I said of course, that’s so special. To be able to have her always wherever I go even when I move in the future. It means so much to have these keep sakes of her physically. I will pick them up when they call me whenever they are ready.

They didn’t tell me too much about it actually which I was surprised, we all tried to get it done relatively quickly for her sake
:hitSomething about loved ones being reunited in death really gets to me. :hit
It's so beautiful the promise you made to him, looking after her since he couldn't anymore.

It's nice to find a really professional, caring vet office. You'd think all vets would realize that people can be just as attached to a bird or a lizard as to a cat or a dog, but not all of them do.

Things can move really fast in the heat of the moment and then a person is left with a lot of questions that they forgot to ask. Maybe they could answer a few for you when you go to pick her up.

I will definitely try to ask about it in the weeks to come while waiting for her ashes. I’ll show the footprint too, and yes it was a difficult time and was all happening so fast and I didn’t want to miss a moment with her. It was emotional.

Yes exactly. So many places wouldn’t even consider her.. I’m grateful for these people. They really did think of her first. They were so good to her.

That's a high compliment for you that the office was saying what a good bird she was.

I was figuring since her name was Peep you had probably gotten her as a very young baby or even hatched her yourself. That's usually how birds get baby sound names ;) Very cute. I love it. Ebony sounds very regal. Is she the last turkey, or just the last from that original batch?

Yes I actually acquired all four both males Shadow, and the other was Midnight, and both hens Peep and Ebony from my grandpas turkey hatchery. As hatchlings day old, I raised them all up and cared for them and hand tamed them and worked day and night with them. I’m all she’s ever known. That’s why I stressed me being with her when she went, she was afraid. She’s never left my house since I got her. She is my lady in general, this hatch of four was all I had. Once the Toms went, I had my two ladies. Housed separately, but I had them both. Now just Ebony. Who’s already been alone.. love them so much.

And thank you so much. My birds are well behaved, im proud to work with them and have them all

Right before she went. Last pic of her alive. My baby. She’s stronger than I.

Looking forward to seeing the print. It's nice they do it right there so you have something to take home with you immediately.

I had the same exact experience when trying to find someone to help my Butternut. I called office after office and was told that they don't see "exotics" or to try such and such a place (which I had already called and they're the ones that referred me to the place I was currently trying), all this while clutching a dying baby hamster to my chest and trying to maintain enough composure to talk on the phone. You'd think more vets could be trained, at the very least, in end of life care for these animals. How many different ways can there be to euthanize something? Just have a chart with the type of animal, the drug and the dosage. (I'm probably oversimplifying it, so no offense to any vets/vet techs out there, but it's very distressing as a pet owner to feel you have nowhere to go in times of crisis. And honestly, I don't know how specialize the training was that went into Butternut's care. They took xrays of her (pretty sure you position the animal and press a button), put her on oxygen (took a little tiny nose cone and put her head inside of it with the gas turned on, like you would with any other animal) and gave her an injection of antibiotics (maybe this bit would be harder without training, learning to properly inject a hamster, but still. If you've given one injection it probably wouldn't take that much longer to learn how to give one to a hamster instead of a cat). Sorry this kind of turned into a rant. It's just hard having "unconventional" pets that nobody wants to deal with treating.

I did learn one important lesson though. Have a vet picked out that you know you can rely on prior to having an emergency come up. I know that seems like a really obvious thing, but it's just not something I thought about with the hamsters because they're not like dogs or cats. You don't take them in for vaccinations or to be spayed or anything like that. They basically just live out their lives in your home and that's the end of it.

This was a hard lesson to learn, but guess who has figured out that there's a chicken vet quite near to her house? ;) I will never let myself end up in the situation I was in with Butternut happen with another animal. I will always have a vet that I know I can go to.

She looks glad to be able to rest her head on you one last time. I'm so glad you could be there for her when she passed.

Are you going to get some babies for Ebony maybe so she has some company? I don't know about turkeys, but I know with chickens you're supposed to have at least 5 of them. I feel sorry for her being alone now. You have chickens too, right? Does she hang out with them at least?
