Help! What happened to my egg??

It’s day 18 and I went to clean up the boxes and check on my girls only to be surprised by this (see pic). What happened!!!!!!!!

Don’t be discouraged! The joy of seeing chicks makes up for the disappointment of the losses. I hear hens have ultraviolet vision, but that’s all I know.

No I don’t see anything else laying around. No fragments. No goo. Just the empty egg. First time hatch here.

I have no experience with this, but I hear hens will eat “bad eggs”. Maybe that’s what happened? I do agree that something ate it.​

It looks like it was alive recently, lots of veins.

Check for mice. We had a mouse that had gotten under a hen and eaten her eggs

Horrible for you to find that, and so close to hatch day.
Mice were a big problem for me. I'm sure it was the mice that somehow managed to keep rolling eggs out of the nesting boxes.
I kept finding tiny scratch marks on the eggs too.
