help, why is my baby chick doing this? UPDATE: doing great (pic pg5)

well it is still alive and seems to be ok. it is very light(weight) and is way too small and weak to be around the others. only time will tell i guess.

i also used a towel instead of shavings in its own little area.

If you are comfortable giving injections you can give it some vitamins under the loose skin of the neck. With all the gasping it may not be getting the nutrients/water it needs... it may help....

def getting better. please keep up the

and prayers.

very much improved. i still have it away from the others but it is def better. stronger and more vocal.

the brooder temp is key.

update: chick is doing great. has come to enjoy being held. everytime it sees us it is like "pick me up, pick me up".

i sure hope it ends up being a hen.

Glad to hear your little one is one the mend.

All our chooks free range and often a chicks eyes will be bigger than his gullet and he'll eat a bug that's just a little big or a little rough for him and then they go into this 'gasping' mode for a while and then once they get it right down into their crops they're fine again.
It's quite distressing to watch but you know as long as they can still cheep that their windpipe isn't blocked.
It's worth watching out for though as we've had two chicks get one of my daughters hairs (long long hair) wrapped round their tongues and half into their crops and they just can't get them out. It's a delicate operation with tweezers - they don't like it though !!!
