Hi Again, Roz --- I am still so impressed with your photo!
You are right - this is painful. Many animals would rub it with their paw and just make it worse. They would need to wear an Elizabethan collar (like a plastic funnel). At least Lily is spared that inconvenience.
TREATMENT: A few simple absorbable sutures perhaps covered with a graph flapped from the conjunctiva plus antibiotics both topical & systemic and maybe NSAIDs or corticosteroids.
I know. Not as simple as it sounds. Can't be done without anesthesia. But I would stick with her and give her a chance to heal on her own with just the antibiotics. The graph and NSAIDs are optional.
You have done an amazing job here and Lily is very tough (and pampered)
I hate to see you put her down when you have come this far. On the other end, I remember what you said about going to a vet. Right now, you are doing the best you can which is pretty amazing.
Whatever you decide, I will understand.
You may be wondering what happened to the iris. It either prolapsed (outside the wound) or it is incarcerated (inside). I do not see any signs of it and since it was recently seen, then it must be inside.
Most definitely the stress of an injury and change in routine will interrupt egg laying. Also, I have been contemplating animal depression & boredom. What Lily needs is a friend in a next door cage to keep her company. Just what you DO NOT need --- more poopy towels! At least try leaving a radio on while you are gone. (Showing my age there; do people still have radios?)
I will check back tomorrow to see if you have any questions. Take Care!
