Help with eye injury.

Hi Again, Roz --- I am still so impressed with your photo!

You are right - this is painful. Many animals would rub it with their paw and just make it worse. They would need to wear an Elizabethan collar (like a plastic funnel). At least Lily is spared that inconvenience.

TREATMENT: A few simple absorbable sutures perhaps covered with a graph flapped from the conjunctiva plus antibiotics both topical & systemic and maybe NSAIDs or corticosteroids.

I know. Not as simple as it sounds. Can't be done without anesthesia. But I would stick with her and give her a chance to heal on her own with just the antibiotics. The graph and NSAIDs are optional.

You have done an amazing job here and Lily is very tough (and pampered) :) I hate to see you put her down when you have come this far. On the other end, I remember what you said about going to a vet. Right now, you are doing the best you can which is pretty amazing.

Whatever you decide, I will understand.

You may be wondering what happened to the iris. It either prolapsed (outside the wound) or it is incarcerated (inside). I do not see any signs of it and since it was recently seen, then it must be inside.

Most definitely the stress of an injury and change in routine will interrupt egg laying. Also, I have been contemplating animal depression & boredom. What Lily needs is a friend in a next door cage to keep her company. Just what you DO NOT need --- more poopy towels! At least try leaving a radio on while you are gone. (Showing my age there; do people still have radios?)

I will check back tomorrow to see if you have any questions. Take Care!:)

They DO look like they are laughing. There are few experiences more gratifying than rescuing an animal. They deserve so much more than what many people give them.

If you can keep it relatively free of infection, I think it will knit together. That is what would happen anyway --- the stitches just help hold it closed. It could be much worse --- gaping open or with a few chunks missing (graph necessary) . The scarring may be a little thicker.

On the other end it could develop a horrible infection. Say, no more dust baths til you see that closing up.

Progress report:
I have to work today, so Lily's ICU suite has been refreshed and filled with goodies for the day. The TV is on for her enjoyment, at least I hope she enjoys it. I don't want her any more bored than she already is.
The eye looks a little different. Like there is tissue starting to cross the worst of the torn area. Very thin, granulation-like. Still no infection.
Pen. IM continues, with the eye ointment. I Tried to get chlorampheticol ointment online, so far no luck.

I'm sorry I haven't updated you all on how my hen is doing but.. her eye is slowly opening but she can't quite see out of it yet.
