Hi All...When we rescued our Turkey we noticed that it limped and both feet looked deformed. Being new Turkey owner we just assumed that the feet looked like that because of age. After doing research we found out Wobbles had Scaley Mites. For a few weeks we've been treating the mites. And now since the scales have been cleared of the mites we noticed that the bottom scales of his legs are pressing on his feet and I know is causing pain, Wobbles still limps. My question is......do the scales have nerves in them and can we trim them away from the top of his foot?
Thanks for "ANY" info. I want to help our Turkey walk better. We've been told that Wobbles is about 6 years old and he is a big boy too.

I would think, if Wobbles will allow it, you could probably use a heavy grit emery board to rasp away the offending edges. I wouldn't try cutting.

Thanks for your reply, our problem is that Wobble's needs a good 1/2 inch of thick scale removed. I'm thinking that a emory board would take too long and would be a lot of stress for him. Any Other suggestions outside of paying a Vet to come out? Thank You!

If you can clearly identify and manipulate those scales that are impinging on feet the most you could try clipping tips. Maybe keeping legs/top of feet rubbed down with something like Vaseline Intensive nail/skin conditioner. You can give Aspirin to the guy by crushing up 81mg tabs into a powder and give 2.5 mg. per pound TID (daub up powder on chunks of grape for med compliance). Hopefully his next molt will clear up most of the mite damage as scales change out.
