I'm sorry it didn't go well. I have only used shears on chicks, and a hatchet or axe on adults...

after snipping at the corners of his jaws repeatedly until he started to actually bleed (very very little) I gave up as doing this started to make me extremely dizzy and Ill I grabbed the machete... hit him - he screamed - hit him again - he did his death throes.... only to come to and I knew he was because storm is rolling in fast and wind was rocking his entire body yet he kept his eye glued on me - whacked him again and he screamed - again and death throes again.... this time he went completely limp after...

Rin..break the neck..or use a hatchet..

If theres a next time I certainly will.. he was a nice boy... noone would buy him though and between him and my last rooster their crowing was driving me absolutely insane. From 3am to 8pm for three days straight now - because one of my girls started laying. I don;t mind some crowing but they NEVER stopped and noone would buy this one.

Not to mention he has really bad qualities for D'uccles - weird random black hood of feathers. I don't want him to keep breeding with my females.

not to mention he is dead now. I'm not eating him and frankly I'm so sick and dizzy going out there yet again to just chop his head off for the heck of it - in the middle of a thunderstorm... I'll get hurt.

You did really well!!!!!!!!!!!! Now go find a good recipy and remember they are hard to cook!!!!!!! Being boys!!!!!!!
Yeah I know the crowing is bad sometimes. We had to get rid of our rooster as a neighbour complained. We found a home !!!!

Well, if it's any consolation, you can be relitively certain that it can't get worse from here on out...

...what I have done is to make sure that my hatchet is RAZOR sharp, get a nice big, sturdy stump, wrap the bird in an old towel (to prevent flapping), tie a string or piece of baling twine around the neck (with a slip knot) have my husband hold the string out when I am ready (or you can tie it to something and pull back on the bird to extend the neck) and whack. Once I had to whack twice, but I'm pretty sure that the deed was done the first time. Maybe try something different next time, maybe it's having him hanging thats doing it...???

I use a good heavy axe and just lop the head off. It's quick and as long as you use a heavy sharp axe it does get a lot easier the more you do.
