HELP!! Wrong end pip?!?! (Oh No! Complications!!!)

I have been reading this thread as I sit in my "brooder" room, formerly my craft room, with 22 eggs on day 21. This is my 2nd hatch, my first was 6 chocolate orp bantams that the post office sent to New Jersey on their trip from California to Oregon, 2 out of 6 hatched, 1 wrong end died. My surviving chick, Fudge, who took 4 hours from first pip to exit is in a brooder right next to the incubator. When I first thought I heard chirping from the bator I looked at her & she was just looking towards the incubator with her head tipped, confirming the chirp. My first pip, on a lavender orp egg from JC Hinks, occurred within the last couple of hours. Guess I am up for the night. I don't think I will be able to wait out all 22 eggs.

It is reassuring to have BYC forum to go to for answers to my middle of the night questions. I want to congratulate Reurra on her hatch, I never realized it would be this hard. When I asked for chickens for Christmas (again) my DH finally said yes but "they are your chickens, I'm not having anything to do with them". Then when my little chocolate was about 2 days old he said I wish she wasn't too little to hold & I told him he could pick her up, well, there went my best chicken (I also have 7 feed store chicks, 6 buff orps & 1 red sex link. But Fudge is now his & he is hers. He is becoming chicken guy, actually just poked his head in, wondering where I was.

But I want to thank all of you whose expertise I have relied on & those of you who have asked my questions so I could read all the great advise. You all make me feel sane about this whole chicken thing. So thanks and good hatching. Pam

BYC has been invaluable to me since I decided to get chickens. I Am SOOOOO glad I was able to find it! husbands just cant be tough guys around the cuteness!! I swear if my chicks got any cuter, the world would explode!!

Here is something new...it could be nothing. Blue decided to eat, but got food stuck in her throat. I helped message i down, but im unsure if it will be an ongoing problem. I also noticed her chirp is hoarse compared to the others. Her little neck just under her chin is still swollen.

I think this may be similar to what you're dealing with:

No comment on the dye job

If she's hungry feed her some egg yolk. Or soak some of her chick starter and give it to her very wet so it's easier to swallow. Hopefully the swelling will go down soon so she can eat properly.

Thats an interesting thread there. It has some similarities, but Im not sure what to think.

Heres little blues symptomes:

Hoarse wet sounding chirp

sleeping all the time

Alert when awake, pecking at things, bright eyed

Does not walked very well

Her neck seems more puffy and water filled than it is hard.

She is lifting her head, and is in normal position as of yesterday.

Im hoping the food she ate was just some large piece that got stuck and would not move. I massaged it nwo I cant feel anything in her neck or crop.

She seem interested in things, but no hungry now, nor is she interested in water. I did a little drop on the side of her beak and although she appeared to swallow, she really didnt seem like she wanted it. She is not even 24 hours old yet, so Im thinking that she just might not be ready to eat. I have her in with the general population, but Im considering putting her back in her box to rest.

Apart from her swollen neck she sounds o.k. They do sometimes have this hoarse, wet sounding chirp. It drove me crazy with worry at first! And her walking too. They are a bit clumsy when they are very young still, but if there's no improvement by tomorrow we can investigate.
I think let her sleep and wait and see what she's like tomorrow. She won't be very interested in food and water because she's full of yolk still. My chicks show very little interest before the second or third day and even then not much in the food. If she can sleep in the box without getting disturbed by the other rascals let her do that.

Yeah, Im going to put her in the box since I ahve to go to town. She will be near the light too so she should stay warm.

I'll give updates and she progresses!

I'm keeping a chick cheer for her, hope she is doing better when you get back. Doesn't take long to love them.

Well, I just got back. i got electrolyte and vitamin booster for the water and some ACV. Sadly no one ahd a red bulb...which is weird, but it seems lots of places are selling the newer energy saving bulbs instead. So, no red bulb. However, the new feeder i got them is keeping them entertained.

Lil' Blue is doing great so far. Shes up and around and insists on climbing up on the new feeder. Its one of those long ones with the holes in it to prevent scratching and food waste. She is eating and does not appear to be getting things stuck. The other birds are still pecking her, but her mother was always a bottom hen, so maybe she is too. She is trying to walk more, though shaky. Her head is up and she is responding more to things around her. Still sleepy though lol.

Lil' Yellow (Broken Egg) is doing good too. he has become one of the bullies, believe it or not lol. he does not appear to be puffy any more. A few bright green bubbly poops and he seems normal now. He likes to charge across the brooder and flap his wings. i think he might be a roo lol.

Oh that's great. I'm glad they are doing so well! I can't say I blame little Yellow for being a bit of bully though

How Blue's throat? Still swollen? it's weird that you cannot get a red lamp. So many people use them and not just for chicks.
