Help!

Thanks, it comforting to know :) I guess he;ll either make it or he won't. I'm honestly surprised he made it this far, shipped in 30 below weather, put in a cheap incubator for my first try ever XD

Am I right to think the shipping might have caused the backwards hatch?

How's he doing, any progress?
I don't think it is shipping that caused I know it also happens in eggs that aren't shipped. I had a duck hatch from the small end quite a few years ago. I eventually helped it but it wasn't making progress just getting the hole bigger and bigger not turning. But I think I could have waited longer before helping as all the yolk wasn't completely absorbed, then it had a curled toe. But it came out of the curled toe and the yolk did absorb. I called him Lucky. But I think if I wouldn't have rushed in it probably would have done it own it's own. But I was a nervous and hadn't found these boards with all this great info. Sally Sunshine has exellent post as well about helping out chicks. If she wasn't one of those on the stickies I suggest you read her stuff too.

We gave him 14 hours with no prgress then i caved and zipped him. went fine but he still cant seem to turn to open the membranr. bad news is his brothers have hatched so im scared to open the incubator and chill the hatchlings. im going to pop him when i move the others to the brooder. hes still breathing and wriggling so i hope he cam last. hes at about 30 hrs since pip now

As sad as it is, chicks like this should not be helped out of the egg. This is natures way of weeding out the weak and sick birds. Chances are you will end up putting him down if you help him out of the egg instead of letting him do it himself. Rarely do these type of chicks live long.

I only help as long as its dry. First sign of blood and I am outa there! If you must. Use tweezers to remove the cap and unzip him down his back. Good Luck. I UNZIPPED MY BACKWARDS BABY this morning. Its ok and a lovely different color. Akkk just found a second backwards baby, he is peeping bloody murder!!

What kind of quail do you have Walking North? Post a pic of the ones so far. Glory in the succsess for a few minutes. It will calm your efforts with your backwards baby.

And these are my four precious darlings :)
They're safely in the brooder. Had to move them cause they started pecking the floor like crazy, have only been in the bator for like 12 hours. They're eating up the turkey grower like it's going out of fashion.
I caved and helped Lucky (yes I know, don't name the one that is probably going to die

) After the others were out I pulled him and hatched him out myself, I couldn't bear watching his struggles getting weaker and weaker and do nothing :( My thoughts are, he was going to die anyway, I can only do good. He's out of the egg now. Funnily enough, the air bubble wasn't detached. He's the same size as the smaller chicks so it wasn't his size. I'm really not sure why he didn't turn. He was stuck to the back piece of the shell by a tiny gooey strand. I moistened it and waited but he wasn't able to get it off, and the strand dragged the bottom half of the egg shell after him. After checking for blood or vessels, I snipped. There's nothing more I can do from here. He's fully formed, nothing seems out of the ordinary, he's walking and sleeping. I'm waiting for him to dry off now. Time will tell I guess.

I know a lot of people don't believe in interfering, but in the end, incubation isn't natural to them so maybe some of the hatching problems they run across aren't natural either. If he's too weak to make it at least his birdy mama did everything she could.
