help?....

We all are. Your first batch is like having little children, you worry about every little thing that you haven't seen before. I seriously thought my chicken was dying the first time I saw a dust bath

I've had chickens for 7 years now, and I still learn new things every week, especially on BYC. You're going to love it

It's like the "First Kid/Second Kid" commercials for diapers that are out there now. Sunbathing is another one that will freak you out the first time you see it - your birds just laying out on the ground looking dead, truthfully, just enjoying a nice snooze in the warmth.

Yep, I remember that one, too

Tailgating on this conversation .... I have 2 week old pullets .... I put a pie tin with sand in their brooder yesterday ..... and they just stared at it. I think one or two of them hopped through it so I pulled it out a few hours later. Should I just leave it in there?? Man I can just imagine the mess in my livingroom now!!! LOL

It is fine to leave it in but you will have to remove the poo each day or so (I just use a plastic groc bag over my hand to scoop it out and clean the yuck out of the water at the same time). They will use it for dust bathing and grit at the same time. No play sand that has been treated with a chemical for cleaning. Just good old cheap construction sand works great, I use a disposable pie tin for it or small dog dish in the starter brooder.
