Hen can cackle like a roo?

Help, I need some clarification..

1) How can you tell from that small picture that this is a rooster? What traits are you seeing?

2) What is the difference between "cackling" vs. "crowing".

Thank you!

You can make the picture bigger, but even if you don't, those gorgeous sickle, saddle and hackle feathers give it away. Only boys have the pointy hackle and saddle feathers and the long, shiny, sickle feathers. Plus the comb.

I can't explain the difference between cackling and crowing if you haven't heard either. Crowing is normally a sound a rooster makes to show dominance, alert others of danger, etc. A hen can crow as well, but usually they don't. Cackling is way different...I don't know how to explain it, just normal chicken sounds, I guess.

Your bird is a rooster. If it's making rooster-like sounds, that's why. Doesn't matter what sounds some hens might make, or the difference between cackling and crowing. That's a male.
